In a wonderful nod to Christian morality, pop star Justin Bieber revealed that he underwent a self-imposed year of celibacy prior to his marriage with model Haley Baldwin — in order to honor God.
Speaking with Vogue about his courtship with Baldwin and 2018 wedding, Bieber confessed to giving up sex for a year, admitting he had a "legitimate problem" with premarital sex. Not only did Bieber experience a spiritual transformation, he realized that God's call to chastity is about liberating people from being slaves to their passions.
"He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff," Bieber told Vogue. "He's like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain."
The pop star went on to say that premarital sex often serves as a crutch for people making up for a lack of perceivedself-worth, adding that he wanted to "rededicate" his body to God to cleanse his soul.
"Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth," Bieber said. "Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior."
Bieber and Baldwin tied the knot after an on-again/off-again relationship. They rekindled their love in June 2018 at a conference hosted by their pastor friend Rich Wilkerson, Jr. Hailey Baldwin said the "common denominator" between them has always been church.
"The common denominator, I promise you, is always church," Baldwin said. "By then we were past the drama. I just gave him a hug. By the end of the conference, he was like, ‘We’re not going to be friends.’ I was like, ‘We’re not?’"
Justin Bieber's admission of chastity follows his wife's recent viral Instagram post in which she praised God for creating people in His image as unique individuals.
"God made us individuals for a reason, with our own beauty, our own personalities, and our own story because there's a specific plan and purpose for each and every human created and he makes no mistakes!!" wrote Hailey on Instagram, adding, "I am enough, and I'm loved, and you are enough and you're loved."
Haley also commented on her issues with insecurity throughout her life by always comparing herself to others.
"I’m a 22 years old, and the truth is no matter how amazing life may look from the outside I struggle," she explained. "I'm insecure, I'm fragile, I'm hurting, I have fears, I have doubts, I have anxiety, I get sad, I get angry. I have had more days than I can count where I've found myself scrolling through Instagram comparing myself, comparing my looks, feeling like I'm not good enough feeling like I lack so many things and really struggling to be confident in who I am because I constantly feel like I’m just not good enough. Every single day is a confidence battle for me."
"I'm a young woman, I'm learning who I am and, it's REALLY FREAKING HARD," the post continued. "It's hard finding who you are, but what’s even harder is being picked apart and compared to other women while trying to do that. There are days that I’m simply broken because of it."
"It would be incredible if other young girls and women could find it in themselves to lift each other up, to stop making other women who are struggling JUST LIKE THEM, feel incompetent and less than," the model offered. "We ALL have flaws, and that will never change."
