In a statement issued last month, the American College of Pediatricians (ACP) urged educators and legislators to reject policies favoring transgenderism, saying unequivocally, "Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse."
Although the statement was issued February 2 according to CNS News, the full peer-reviewed statement is expected to be released in the summer of 2016. It has so far elicited unanimous support from most health organizations and news sites; however, far-left critics dismissed the group of medical doctors as a “Christian lobby group” because it does not agree with the trans political agenda.
The Huffington Post’s Brynn Tannehill goes so far as to blast one of the psychiatrists involved in the study, McHugh, for using “the ever more tarnished name of Johns Hopkins to distort science and spread transphobic misinformation.”
“The ACP is a group of less than 200 ultra-conservative, mostly Catholic, people... who oppose letting gay people be parents, the HPV vaccine, marriage equality, birth control and medical care for transgender people,” Tannehill wrote.
A self-purported scientist and trans advocate, Tannehill blames trans suicide rates on “transphobia” and argues “it’s time we stop trying to fix transgender people. It’s time to fix society.”
The ACP statement, written by the ACP’s president Michelle A. Cretella, vice president Quentin Van Meter, and Johns Hopkins psychiatrist Paul McHugh, listed eight reasons why the ideology believing in gender transitioning is harmful.
First, “human sexuality is an objective biological binary trait.” Being male or female is less a coincidental genetic trait than it is a functional difference in the human species existing for the purpose of procreation.
Second, gender is sociological while sex is biological. A person’s biological sexual orientation from birth does not alter over time with ideology.
Third, “a person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking,” in other words, a psychological problem, and should be treated as such. Gender Identity Disorder is recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) as a mental disorder, not a genetic one.
Fourth, using puberty-blocking hormones to reverse a natural biological sexual trait can be dangerous both physically and mentally.
Fifth, up to 98% of gender ambiguous boys and 88% of gender ambiguous girls are likely to accept their biological sex after passing through puberty naturally, according to the APA.
Sixth, “Children who use puberty blockers to impersonate the opposite sex will require cross-sex hormones in late adolescence.”
Seventh, suicide rates are “twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery, even in Sweden which is among the most LGBQT-affirming countries.” Condemning young children to a lifetime risk of suicide and mental disorders is both cruel and senseless.
Eighth, “endorsing gender discordance as normal via public education and legal policies will confuse children and parents, leading more children to present to 'gender clinics' where they will be given puberty-blocking drugs. This, in turn, virtually ensures that they will 'choose' a lifetime of carcinogenic and otherwise toxic cross-sex hormones, and likely consider unnecessary surgical mutilation of their healthy body parts as young adults.”
In summary, the physicians all agreed on one truth: “Facts -- not ideology -- determine reality.”
The trans agenda's distortion of reality in the form of glorifying mental illness while demonizing a healthy sexual mindset is a clear example of what the ACP warned would damage children. Leftist organizations do it every day by demonizing conservative organizations and hijacking the label of political impartiality.
The ACP mission statement pledges support to all children, regardless of their physical and emotional health circumstances.
