On Sunday and Monday, politicians and media commentators of the political Left savaged the Trump administration after tear gas was fired at migrants who attempted to break through the U.S. border in San Ysidro, throwing rocks at border patrol. According to Fox News:
U.S. border agents shot several rounds of tear gas after some migrants attempted to penetrate various points along the border and threw what appeared to be rocks at U.S. authorities. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement that some migrants "attempted to breach legacy fence infrastructure along the border and sought to harm CBP personnel by throwing projectiles at them.

This drove Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) to tweet in alarm:
Here was Symone Sanders of CNN:
Schatz and Sanders must have ignored that back in 2013, under the Obama administration, border officers were also forced to use pepper spray against those attempting to violate the border. As the Washington Examiner pointed out, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported on that incident at the time:
A group of about 100 people trying to illegally cross the border Sunday near the San Ysidro port of entry threw rocks and bottles at U.S. Border Patrol agents, who responded by using pepper spray and other means to force the crowd back into Mexico, federal officials said.
Meanwhile, some in the media attempted to pretend nothing happened:
Of course, the Germans didn’t have to abrogate the entire French border in order to invade France in 1940, so this point is idiotic. The length of a border does not in fact determine whether the border has been overwhelmed.
But the Left apparently believes that those who attempted to storm the border belong in the United States, even as they attempt to throw rocks at border police and carry the flags of foreign nations:
This is a massive disconnect from what most Americans believe about illegal immigration. We’re tolerant of those who wish to immigrate legally; we’re even tolerant of those who wish to come here to build a better life while joining the American family. We’re not particularly tolerant of those attempting to storm our borders or assault law enforcement. But if this is the way the Twitter Left wants to play things, they shouldn’t be surprised when Trump keeps pressing the issue. After all, he’s a lot closer to right than they are.
