The right-leaning Washington Examiner’s* Twitter account was hacked early Monday morning, sending out a tweet claiming President Donald "Trump is going to hell.”
The tweet was quickly deleted, but a screenshot revealed the full message.
“Trump is going to hell,” the tweet began. “Anyone who ever read the bible can tell you where it stands on rich adulterers. The key to God’s forgiveness is repentance. Trump’s entire political career has been about the exact opposite of that. Also this paper is garbage for promoting ‘Trump and God.’”
The Washington Examiner stopped publishing a daily newspaper in 2013, but does release a weekly magazine.
The tweet was posted at 5:13 a.m. ET and was taken down around 7 a.m. A tweet explaining the situation was released.
“The Washington Examiner’s Twitter feed was hacked and a tweet was posted that did not come from our staff,” it said. “We are taking appropriate action and will issue a further statement if necessary.”
A spokesperson for the news outlet would not provide further details.
*Full disclosure: I wrote for the Examiner for three years, between 2013 and 2016.
