Sacramento Bee Begs Pelosi NOT To Run For Speaker Again

In a blistering indictment of her party-damaging personal ambitions, the Sacramento Bee editorial board published an editorial imploring Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to "forget being speaker" — so she doesn't end up wrecking her party's chances to win back the House in November.

"The Republican Party is now clearly the party of Donald Trump," the Bee's editorial board writes. "The Democratic Party cannot be seen as the party of Nancy Pelosi and win in November."

And it only gets more blunt from there.

"It’s getting close to crunch time, and the San Francisco Democrat must put her party and her country ahead of her personal ambition and declare that she will not seek the speakership again," the editorial continues. "This is much bigger than her. To retake control of the House, Democrats need to gain at least 23 seats in November. That’s no easy task. And it’s even more difficult now that Pelosi’s future has become a distracting campaign issue for Democrats in key swing districts, where they need moderate and even Republican votes to win."

Pelosi's attempt at "playing the victim," the board suggests, is only making things worse: "Asked during a Sunday interview about Democrats opposing her for speaker, she accused MSNBC of being on a 'jag' against her. Better than most, she ought to know that’s getting precariously close to Trump calling any critical coverage 'fake news.'"

As evidence of the growing rebellion against her in her own party, the Bee cites the 45 Democratic nominees and 10 Democratic incumbents who have already publicly declared that they will not back her as speaker.

Meanwhile, Republicans are having a blast painting the Democrats as the Party of Pelosi. Here's a particularly devastating example:

Trump, who revels in picking his opponents, is literally begging Democrats to "not distance yourselves from Nancy Pelosi":

The editorial board predicts that who is slated as the Democrats' next speaker will matter more and more the closer we get to November, as the Republicans continue to ratchet up their anti-Pelosi campaigns.

The Bee editorial board concludes by offering Pelosi a bone: "With her three decades in Congress, Pelosi can still have a voice advocating for California and the issues she cares about," they write. "But if she truly believes what she says about how important it is for Democrats to retake the House so they can stop Trump, she must accept that it can’t be with her as speaker."
