Federal officials revealed on Tuesday that a suspected serial rapist in Northern California that posed as a ride-share driver is an illegal alien.
Orlando Vilchez Lazo, 36, is a Peruvian national and is illegally in the United States, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Fox News reports:
Vilchez Lazo has been dubbed the “ride-share rapist,” because he would allegedly drive his car around clubs in the city and pose as a driver. The New York Times, citing authorities, reported that he even had a sticker on his car to indicate he was working for a company.
Vilchez Lazo was arrested last week on four counts of felony rape and is currently jailed since he was unable to come up with $4.2 million in bail.
The Associated Press reports that ICE has filed a detainer request against Vilchez Lazo with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department so that they are notified if he is about to be released from custody so that they can come and pick him up for immigration-related crimes.
"ICE maintains that cooperation by local law enforcement is an indispensable component of promoting public safety," ICE said in a statement. "The San Francisco jail does not honor ICE detainers nor notify ICE about the impending release of aliens in its custody. In doing so, the jail not only provides a refuge for illegal aliens, but it also shields criminal aliens who prey on people in the community."
