In a massive midterms gift to Republicans, "Abolish ICE" has become the Democratic Party's almost official slogan, promoted most prominently by "the future" of the party, Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. And anti-ICE activists just keep doing increasingly unhinged stuff to make sure Americans don't miss just how radical those supporting the movement are.
An "Abolish ICE" protest in Columbus, Ohio on Monday went completely off the rails when activists decided to make an important statement about dismantling immigration enforcement and opening up the borders by . . . suspending a woman from a giant wooden contraption, duct-taping a dude to the base, and then chanting "F*** the Police!" for the news cameras.
The Columbus Dispatch's Abbey Marshall was on the scene at the ill-conceived protest to provide some live updates, photos and videos for posterity:
By the end of the day, Marshall said police informed her that 12 ICE abolishers had been arrested for various offenses, including disorderly conduct, trespassing and resisting arrest.
Ocasio-Cortez, who famously upset the incumbent Democrat in NY's 14th Congressional District and has been praised by the head of the DNC as "the future" of the party, has led the charge to "Abolish ICE." In a recent interview with The Intercept, Ocasio-Cortez explained all the reasons she's trying to take down ICE, among them their supposed "quota" system.
"As a matter of fact, ICE is the only criminal investigative agency, the only enforcement agency in the United States that has a bed quota. So ICE is required to fill 34,000 beds with detainees every single night and that number has only been increasing since 2009," she claimed. But even left-leaning PolitiFact couldn't remain silent on the false claim, noting that ICE is required to maintain 34,000 beds, not fill them.
