On Friday, a CNN panel ripped TIME for its dishonest magazine cover that falsely depicted a 2-year-old Honduran girl as the face of children being separated from their parents as a result of the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on illegal immigration.
The segment on CNN came after the girl's father, U.S. officials, and Honduran officials all confirmed that she was never separated from her mother. The girl’s father also claims that the mother abandoned her three other children and paid a human smuggler $6,000 to illegally smuggle herself and the girl into the United States.
"Not just Republicans should pounce, media should pounce, Democrats should pounce, because when you make someone the emblem of a problem in a land where people have a lot of suspicions about media coverage and think this might be somebody messing with them or exaggerating a problem that existed in a different capacity under Obama,” CNN contributor Mary Katharine Ham said. "Then yeah, when you put that person as the symbol and it turns out she is not affected by that policy and was in fact not separated and her mother was a repeat offender coming over the border again."
“This is infuriating that this happened because it hurts all media,” CNN political analyst Jackie Kucinich said, telling the magazine to "do better."
