OUT OF TOUCH: Pelosi Calls Trump Tax Cut Bonuses To Working Americans A 'Scam'

In our last piece about Rep. Nancy Pelosi (which was earlier this week), we said she'd be saying something stupid again real soon.

And she didn't disappoint.

A day after President Trump's State of the Union address, Pelosi took to the microphones to decry, well, everything he said. But she got stuck on one big point — the president's tax cuts and the bonuses that corporations have been paying out since he signed the bill into law.

"The president presents himself with this GOP tax scam as something that helps the middle class. He, um, kinda presented that. Um. At the same time the tax scam, um, will mean, um, cause for 86 million middle class families to pay more as he pads the pockets of the top one percent," she said.

For the record, nearly 300 companies have announced bonuses for their employees since the tax cut law went into effect. As many as 3 million U.S. workers will receive — or have already gotten — bonuses or raises this year.

And also for the record, these bonuses weren't happening before the Trump tax cuts, only after. So, it's clear that the tax cuts brought the bonuses.

Before the tax cuts passed, Pelosi described them as "crumbs." “In terms of the bonus that corporate America received versus the crumbs that they are giving workers to kind of put the schmooze on is so pathetic. It’s so pathetic,” the San Francisco Democrat said.

$1,000 is "crumbs"? For many people, that's a huge amount of money, especially as a windfall. While Pelosi is (somehow) a multi-millionaire after spending most of her life in politics, 63% of Americans don't have enough savings to cover a $500 emergency, Forbes reported this month.

On Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence ripped Pelosi for her “crumbs" comment.

"I heard Nancy Pelosi, before the tax cut was voted on, predicted economic Armageddon,” Pence told House and Senate Republicans at The Greenbrier resort during their annual retreat.

"It’s just amazing to me that after this tax cut passes, 3 million Americans get another $1,000 in their pockets in many cases, and she actually described that as ‘crumbs,’” he said.

“Let me just remind you all that I come from the JoS A. Bank wing of the West Wing,” Pence said, referencing the discount clothier. “Seriously, people stop me and say, ‘Is that a new suit?’ and I say, ‘Two for one.’”

“If you’re going to say that $1,000 is crumbs, you live in a different world than I’m living in,” he said. “If I had another $1,000 in my pocket at the end of the year, I have a term for that: Christmas. … Or maybe a little something extra for Mrs. Pence.”

But as we did last time, we promise Pelosi will say something stupid again real soon. It's only Thursday, so may even this week.
