Most Americans will mark the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence the same way they celebrate every July 4th — the way John Adams, on the eve of signing the Declaration of Independence, predicted they would — “with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.”
But some of our countrymen — gentleman scholars and dorky dads chief among them — will mark America’s semiquincentennial with another time-honored tradition: reading books about America.
