Oprah: Maybe I’ll Run For President

Interviewed on the David Rubenstein Show, television celebrity Oprah Winfrey indicated she has rethought her position vis-a-vis running for the presidency now that fellow entertainer Donald Trump has been elected.

Rubenstein asked, “Have you ever thought that given the popularity you have, we haven’t broken the glass ceiling yet for women, that you could actually run for president and actually be elected?”

Winfrey replied, “I actually never thought that that was – I never considered the question, even a possibility. I just thought, “Oh? Oh!’”

Rubenstein: “Right. Because it’s clear that you don’t need government experience to be like the president of the United States.”

Winfrey: “That’s what I thought. I thought, ‘Oh, gee, I don’t have the experience; I don’t know enough.’ Now I’m thinking, ‘Oh . . . Oh.’”

Yet in early January, when Winfrey was asked by Stephen Colbert if there was any chance she would run for office, she said firmly, “Never. Never. Never.”

Winfrey, who was called “arguably the most influential woman in the world” by TIME and CNN, was instrumental in popularizing Barack Obama during his ascendancy; she endorsed him in September 2006 even before he had declared himself a candidate. She endorsed him as a candidate in May 2007; in December 2007, she made her first campaign appearances for him.

As noted on Twitter, if she got the nomination, Oprah might have a unique way of announcing her VP selection:
