<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/meta">Meta</a>, the parent company to Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, will release a new microblogging app called Threads — as a potential competitor of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/twitter">Twitter</a> — on Thursday. 
Threads – which will be connected to Instagram, another Meta-owned company – is expected to mimic the Twitter product and draw from Meta’s Instagram user base.
Users will be able to use their Instagram accounts to log in to the new app, which self-describes on the App Store as “Instagram’s text-based conversation app” to “discuss everything from the topics you care about today.” 
Though Meta already owns Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, the company has long searched for a product to compete with Twitter’s popularity: A Twitter employee wrote in an internal post that “Twitter is in crisis and Meta needs its mojo back,” according to a December 2022 <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/07/technology/twitter-rivals-alternative-platforms.html">report by The New York Times</a>. The employee added, “LET’S GO FOR THEIR BREAD AND BUTTER.”
The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/mark-zuckerberg-looks-to-deliver-hit-to-elon-musk-with-upcoming-twitter-clone-4a464407?mod=hp_lead_pos4">reported</a> that more than 50 million consumers use both Twitter and Instagram, and Meta likely hopes to capitalize on that base. The company has previously adopted similar tactics to combat competitors, such as introducing Stories to compete with Snapchat and Reels to rival Tiktok.
The announcement comes after months of publicity about a rivalry between <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mark-zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</a> and Twitter owner <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>, culminating in a proposed boxing fight between the two, as suggested by Zuckerberg. 
Since Musk <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-elon-musk-officially-takes-over-twitter-as-sale-is-now-final-top-execs-fired-report-says">took over Twitter</a> in October 2022, the company has faced a bucket of controversies over significant cuts to its workforce, changes to its “blue check” verification process, and loosening moderation rules. The company also gained public attention following Musk’s decision to release the “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/twitter-files">Twitter Files</a>” to several journalists, including Matt Taibbi and Bari Weiss. 
Most recently, Musk announced over the weekend that he would place “temporary limits” on how many Tweets accounts can view per day, citing “extreme levels of data scraping &amp; system manipulation,” according to his Twitter account. 
Twitter has also likely experienced a steep decline in advertising revenue: The company posted $4.5 billion in 2021, the last year its financials were public before Musk took the company private, but Twitter is predicted to garner only $3 billion in 2023 advertising revenue, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/mark-zuckerberg-looks-to-deliver-hit-to-elon-musk-with-upcoming-twitter-clone-4a464407?mod=hp_lead_pos4">The Wall Street Journal</a>. 
Despite the struggles the company has faced, companies Mastodon and BlueSky, as well as Trump’s Truth Social, all of which have tried to rival Twitter, have not yet gained enough traction to compete with Twitter’s more than 350 million users. 
Meta reported a total of 2.99 billion monthly average users across its platforms in its <a href="https://investor.fb.com/investor-news/press-release-details/2023/Meta-Reports-First-Quarter-2023-Results/default.aspx">first-quarter earnings report</a>.

A New York judge rejected former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump’s</a> request to dismiss columnist E. Jean Carroll’s defamation charges against him, only two days after Trump countersued her for defamation.
In a <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.543790/gov.uscourts.nysd.543790.172.0_4.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">46-page opinion</a>, the judge refused to dismiss the case on any of Trump’s four grounds, including “absolute presidential immunity.”
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/e-jean-carroll" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carroll</a> is suing Trump for declaring in a 2019 <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/450116-trump-vehemently-denies-e-jean-carroll-allegation-shes-not-my-type/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> that she was “totally lying” in her allegation that he raped her in the 1990s.
“I’ll say it with great respect: Number one, she’s not my type. Number two, it never happened. It never happened, okay?” Trump told The Hill.
Last month, a jury found Trump guilty of sexually assaulting Carroll and also found Trump liable for defamation after he further denied Carroll’s claims in an October 2022 Truth Social post where he called Carroll’s claims “<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/judge-allows-jean-carroll-amend-pending-defamation-lawsuit/story?id=100052469">a hoax and a lie.</a>”
Carroll recently filed a third defamation claim over further remarks Trump made about the incident in a CNN Town Hall in May, while Trump filed a countersuit against Carroll for defamation over a <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/28/politics/trump-e-jean-carroll-defamation/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">comment she made on CNN</a> following the jury verdict claiming that Trump raped her when the jury had only found him liable for sexual assault.
Trump asked for a dismissal of the claims in part because he said he was guaranteed “non-waivable” presidential immunity, given that he made the comments while he was still president: Trump said he made the comments in 2019 because Carroll’s accusations “threatened his ability to effectively govern the nation.”
U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan concluded that Trump did not sufficiently demonstrate that Carroll’s comments could have harmed his ability to govern.

“Mr. Trump does not identify any connection between the allegedly defamatory content of his statements – that Ms. Carroll fabricated her sexual assault accusation and did so for financial and personal gain – to any official responsibility of the president,” Kaplan wrote.
Kaplan <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/06/29/trump-carroll-defamation-immunity-ruling-00104306" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> that even if presidential immunity did apply, Trump “delayed unduly in raising his presidential immunity” by not invoking it at the time Carroll filed the suit, only raising it three years later.
In the ruling, Kaplan also mentioned another instance in which Trump’s actions as a president did not grant him absolute immunity &#8212; another federal judge, Amit Mehta, wrote that Trump’s January 6 speech to his supporters was not protected on the grounds of presidential immunity.
Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan said the judge’s decision “removes one more impediment” to a January 15 trial.
“Trump chose to waive presidential immunity and now he must live with the results of that decision,” she said.
The judge’s rejection means that the case will likely go to trial, adding it onto the long list of pending cases against Trump, including an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-trump-says-hes-been-indicted-in-federal-documents-investigation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indictment by the Department of Justice</a> over his alleged mishandling of classified documents.

Florida Governor and U.S. presidential candidate Ron DeSantis filed a <a href="https://www.wdwinfo.com/news-stories/fl-gov-ron-desantis-files-motion-to-dismiss-disneys-federal-lawsuit/#motion">motion</a> on Monday asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit Walt Disney Co. filed against him, claiming the company does not have standing to sue him. 
DeSantis, who cited several precedents including a 2023 case the city of Miami filed against him, claims he and another state official, who is also a defendant, are “immune from suit” in his request for a Florida judge to dismiss the suit Disney filed against him in late April.
The company <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ron-desantiss-disney-oversight-board-to-consider-nullifying-agreements-7909173f?mod=article_inline">accused DeSantis</a> of a “targeted campaign of government retaliation” after Florida state lawmakers passed a bill to curb many of Disney’s benefits from its special tax district, Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID). The district has allowed Disney to self-govern the land containing tourist magnet Walt Disney World. 
Disney argued that the state&#8217;s move to strip the company&#8217;s special tax status was in response to the company’s criticism of the state’s Parental Rights in Education Act, known by its critics by its misnomer — the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, to which DeSantis subsequently responded by calling Disney a &#8220;woke corporation.&#8221; 
While the district was not completely disbanded, the state government <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ron-desantiss-disney-oversight-board-to-consider-nullifying-agreements-7909173f?mod=article_inline">renamed</a> the district to “Central Florida Tourism Oversight District” (CFTOD) and replaced its board with the governor’s allies. Disney tried to override the new board’s jurisdiction by striking agreements with the old RCID leadership, just before the new CFTOD board took over.
The new CFTOD board declared the company’s agreements with RCID leadership void, <a href="https://deadline.com/2023/06/ron-desantis-disney-lawsuit-reedy-creek-1235424902/">suing Disney</a> for failing to comply, while DeSantis subsequently signed a bill legally voiding them at the state level. 
The governor’s motion also argues that “any alleged injuries” from the legislation cannot be “traceable to the State Defendants, and enjoining the State Defendants would not provide Disney relief,” since the governor only signed the legislation. 
“When the governor signs a bill, he acts in a legislative, not executive, capacity,” the motion reads, citing an Eleventh Circuit ruling that a plaintiff cannot “challenge a law by suing the legislators who enacted it instead of the officials who execute it.”
The motion <a href="https://deadline.com/2023/06/ron-desantis-disney-lawsuit-reedy-creek-1235424902/">also notes</a> that the governor has no control over the new CFTOD board: “His sole connection to CFTOD is his authority to appoint CFTOD’s Board,” the motion reads.  
A spokesperson for Disney had no immediate comment, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ron-desantis-asks-judge-to-toss-disneys-lawsuit-a6485ff9">The Wall Street Journal</a>. 
The Journal also noted that the lawsuit will be overseen by Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge <a href="https://www.fjc.gov/history/judges/winsor-allen-cothrel">Allen Winsor</a>, who previously blocked two lawsuits that tried to stop the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ron-desantis">Ron DeSantis</a> proposed ending “birthright citizenship” for the children of illegal immigrants at a Monday press conference at a Texas border town. 
DeSantis called for scrapping the long-standing immigration policy – which entitles any child born within U.S. borders to automatic citizenship, regardless of parental citizenship status – for children born to people who have come to the U.S. illegally.
“Birthright citizenship,” or “jus soli,”  is considered by many to be protected under the 14th Amendment, which declares citizenship for “all persons born or naturalized in the United States.” 
The Supreme Court adjudicated on the issue of birthright citizenship in a landmark 1898 case <a href="https://www.oyez.org/cases/1850-1900/169us649">United States v. Wong Kim Ark</a>, where the defendant, born to Chinese parents residing in the U.S., went to visit his parents and was denied reentry to the U.S. on the grounds that he was not a citizen. The court ruled 6-2 that the defendant was a U.S. citizen, establishing that even children of non-citizens born in the U.S. are considered legal citizens.
DeSantis has made immigration a focus of his campaign and recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/no-excuses-desantis-rolls-out-plan-to-shut-down-illegal-immigration-during-border-visit">unveiled a “No Excuses” memo</a> obtained by <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/desantis-debuts-sweeping-border-plan-no-excuses-trump">The Washington Examiner</a> to crack down on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration">illegal immigration</a> in light of the Biden Administration’s current border crisis, and part of the candidate’s plan includes pushing for an end to what he describes as a “failed policy”: “DeSantis will take action to end the idea that children born to illegal aliens are entitled to birthright citizenship,” the memo reads, adding, “Dangling the prize of citizenship to the future offspring of illegal immigrants is a major driver of illegal migration.” 
In the press conference, DeSantis said that, as president, he would work to “remove the incentives to come here illegally to begin with,” among them “birthright citizenship,” which he noted has been abused in its implementation. 
“This idea that you can come across the border and two days later have a child, and somehow that’s an American citizen – that was not the original intention of the 14th Amendment,” he said.
Former President Donald Trump, who announced in late May that he would also seek to end automatic citizenship, had <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-vows-end-birthright-citizenship-children-immigrants-us-illegally-2023-05-30/">promised to restrict the policy</a> in 2018 but never followed through with an executive order to implement it.

DeSantis’ announced proposal received criticism from Democrats, who hailed the proclamation as unconstitutional: Former Obama attorney Joyce Alene <a href="https://twitter.com/JoyceWhiteVance/status/1673386725408645121">tweeted</a>, “DeSantis is, apparently, unfamiliar with the Constitution (Many of the measures he proposes, reflected in this article, aren&#8217;t happening. But that won&#8217;t stop him from trying),” while Voto Latino, a nonprofit focused on getting “Latinx voters” to the polls, described the move as “dangerous and unhinged.”

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ford-motor-co" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ford Motor Company</a> could announce new layoffs as soon as next week &#8212; its third round of layoffs within the last year.
Sources informed <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ford-prepares-new-round-of-layoffs-for-u-s-salaried-workers-a533a7a4?mod=hp_lead_pos5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a> that this round of layoffs will primarily affect U.S. salaried workers in the gas, electric vehicle, and software divisions of the company.
The reported layoffs come after the company <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/22/ford-to-cut-3000-jobs-primarily-in-north-america.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cut 3,000 American jobs</a> last August and announced earlier this year that it would <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ford-to-cut-3-800-jobs-in-europe-in-ev-shift-e1f8f567?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduce its European workforce</a> by 3,800.
The company has struggled to curb its spending as it transitions to electric vehicles and reported a $2 billion net loss last year, all while having committed to spending $50 billion through 2026 in developing its EV unit.
The company <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2022/03/02/ford-accelerating-transformation.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously reported</a> that it hopes to ramp up annual EV production to two million by 2026 and expects EVs to represent half of its global volume by 2030.
CEO Jim Farley has acknowledged the company will need to spend “billions” to procure materials that would enable an increase in EV production, and the company has <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ford-ceo-jim-farley-grapples-with-problems-from-the-auto-makers-past-b098271c?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received criticism</a> from previous CEOs about its operational inefficiencies.
Farley acknowledged that the company has struggled operationally on a February earnings call.
“The strength of our products and revenue has masked this dysfunctionality for a long time. It’s not an excuse, but it’s our reality,” he said.

The report followed an earlier <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2023/06/22/doe-announces-9-2-billion-loan-plan-for-ford-sk-joint-venturefeds-announce-9-2-billion-loan-for-ford/70345917007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announcement</a> from the U.S. Department of Energy that it would loan $9.2 billion to Ford and South Korean battery maker SK &#8212; a loan that covers most of the $11.4 billion the companies had jointly pledged to spend on the venture.
The loan is the most significant financial support the federal government has given an automobile company since the Great Financial Crisis and is the biggest loan the Department of Energy has ever made.
Ford was out-earned by its rival General Motors in 2022, despite GM’s lower revenue and smaller workforce, and Ford’s annual costs are still $7 to $8 billion above where they should be relative to rivals, according to the Journal, though Ford did <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/20/ford-ceo-didnt-hesitate-on-the-tesla-deal-its-good-for-customers.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report above-expected revenue</a> in its most recent quarterly earnings report.
The Journal also reported that the company would work to separate its gas-engine business from its EV and software sectors. Its EV sector is predicted to lose $3 billion in operating profit this year.
A Ford spokesperson said in a statement that the layoffs are in line with the company’s future business plans.
“As we have said, part of the ongoing management of our business includes aligning our global staffing to meet future business plans, as well as staying cost competitive as our industry evolves,” he said.

A bevy of Twitter users mocked <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/john-fetterman" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sen. John Fetterman</a> (D-PA) for his Juneteenth post, recalling a 2013 incident in which Fetterman pursued a black jogger with a shotgun.
The Pennsylvania Democrat was criticized by some for his post about the “long shadow of systemic racism” in light of an incident from 10 years ago in which Fetterman chased an unarmed black man and pointed a gun at him.
The incident took place when Fetterman was still mayor of Braddock, and Fetterman <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fetterman-defends-pulling-shotgun-black-jogger-2013-explains-why-he-would-would-not-do-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> on WTAE television station that he had heard “assault rifle gunshots” and only used the gun to detain the individual, who was running from the scene, until police arrived.
“Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate emancipation + reflect on the long shadow of systemic racism in America,” Fetterman wrote. “PA always stands by the unshakeable truth that Black families matter + Black lives matter.”

Other users flooded Fetterman’s post with similar comments referencing the event, such as: “Did you ever publicly apologize to the black jogger you held at gunpoint?” and “Isn’t that you?” with a link to an article on the event.
Fetterman <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2022-election/fettermans-gun-incident-rattles-black-democrats-pa-senate-race-rcna25649" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was questioned</a> about the incident during his primary campaign and answered, “I attacked the gun violence problem in Braddock, and we succeeded,” adding that his reaction was merely a “split-second decision.”
Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter had criticized Fetterman for his response during his senate campaign, saying, “He’s not shooting straight on this, no pun intended. Just &#8216;fess up. Apologize.”
Fetterman <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/politics/election/john-fetterman-black-jogger-2013-shotgun-20220425.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acknowledged</a> in an earlier TV interview that he “may have broken the law” and is “certainly not above the law,” but maintained in a statement to The Inquirer that he did not know the jogger was black, since the jogger wore a ski mask and was covered in the winter.
A subsequent <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21746151-pa-law-enforcement-reports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">police report</a> found that the sound Fetterman thought was gunfire was actually fireworks, though two other witnesses said they also thought they had heard shots.

Markle’s podcast, which explores historical and cultural stereotypes of women, will not return for a second season — a move which sources say is related to Spotify’s company-wide overhaul of its podcasting business.
The twelve episodes of the first season of the podcast, produced by Markle’s company Archewell Audio, which <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/meghan-markle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Markle</a> co-founded with her husband Prince Harry, aired from August to November 2022.
The show’s Spotify description calls it “a podcast where we investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back.”
Featured guests included Serena Williams discussing the “double standard” women face when labeled “ambitious,” and Mariah Carey on the “complexities surrounding the ‘diva,’” as well as first lady of Canada Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.
Markle and Harry first signed a $20 million deal with Spotify in December 2020, shortly before announcing they would no longer be working members of the British royal family.
Although “Archetypes” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/meghan-markles-new-podcast-archetypes-beats-joe-rogan-this-week-hits-number-one-on-spotify" target="_blank" rel="noopener">topped the charts</a> in its early episodes, sources familiar with the matter said the couple have not met their benchmarks to receive the full payout.
Though Spotify had never confirmed the production of a second season, in the show’s final episode, Markle seemed to suggest the possibility of a second season, saying, “We&#8217;re working on other ways to keep the conversation going, but, just know that as we close out this season of Archetypes, that I thank you.”

Sources attributed the cancellation to Spotify’s recent cutback in support for podcasts after the company announced last week that it would <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/spotify-to-lay-off-hundreds-as-big-tech-aggressively-downsizes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduce its headcount</a> by 6%.
Spotify has struggled to garner revenue from its podcast sector and has started to move away from exclusive streaming deals, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/spotify-to-cut-200-jobs-as-it-reorganizes-podcasting-division-39720004?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a>, which noted that the company is likely to continue its partnerships with its biggest podcasting names, such as Joe Rogan and Emma Chamberlain.
A representative for WME, a talent agency that recently hired Markle, said the podcast’s team members “remain proud” of their work.
“Meghan is continuing to develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform,” the WME representative said.
Markle and Prince Harry also signed a multi-year deal with Netflix, leading to the release of the documentary series “Harry &amp; Meghan,” which explores the couple’s trajectory from early courtship to the decision to leave the royal family and relocate to California.
But that deal, too, has not been without its woes: The docuseries received mostly <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/15/arts/television/netflix-harry-meghan-documentary-review.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">negative reviews</a> from both U.K. and American critics, and, last year, Netflix <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pretending-to-be-a-duchess-wont-buy-her-any-favors-netflix-cancels-meghan-markle-series-purportedly-based-on-her-own-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener">canceled</a> production of “Pearl,” an animated series created by Markle. The couple’s next series, “The Heart of Invictus,” is scheduled for release over the summer, <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/fact-check-netflix-canceled-prince-harry-heart-invictus-series-1806550" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newsweek</a> reported.

Author Elizabeth Gilbert will not release her new book after receiving backlash from fans over the book’s setting in Russia, she announced on Monday. 
Gilbert’s newest novel “The Snow Forest” was due for release in February 2024, but Gilbert told fans in a Twitter video Monday afternoon that she had decided to remove the book from its planned publication schedule. 
The author – known for her 2006 memoir “Eat, Pray, Love” – explained that her book is set in the middle of Siberia during the 20th century and is about a group that “made a decision to remove themselves from society, to resist the Soviet government, and to try to defend nature against industrialization.” 
Gilbert said an announcement of her book elicited a negative response from her Ukrainian readers, “expressing anger, sorrow, disappointment, and pain” that she would “choose to release a book into the world right now … set in Russia.” 
The book’s Goodreads page also received an onslaught of negative responses over the weekend, already posting more than 530 one-star ratings and more than 150 comments.

Though the book depicts resistance against the Soviet government, Gilbert noted that the response from readers was directed toward “any book, no matter what the subject is.” 
&#8220;I do not want to add any harm to a group of people who have already experienced, and who are continuing to experience, grievous and extreme harm,” she said. “It is not the time for this book to be published.”
Gilbert’s decision sparked some criticism that she was censoring her work due to military conflict. PEN America, a nonprofit that advocates for free speech, <a href="https://pen.org/press-release/pen-america-regrettable-that-elizabeth-gilbert-delayed-publication-of-new-novel-set-in-russia/">responded</a> that Gilbert’s decision was “well-intended” but that publication of a novel set in Russia “should not be cast as an act exacerbating oppression.”
Authors Guild CEO Mary Rasenberg said in a <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/06/12/1181714943/elizabeth-gilbert-halts-new-book-release-russia-ukraine">statement to NPR</a> that the organization supports Gilbert’s decision: “Authors should never be required to withdraw books but must have the right to speak or not speak when they wish.”
Gilbert did not confirm whether the book would be published at a later date. 
“I’ve got other book projects that I’m working on,” she said. “I made a decision to turn my attention to working on those now.”
