Somewhere in Europe, a Gen Z American woman is standing before a centuries-old architectural feat, contemplating the decline of modern man. Maybe she’s marveling at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame in Paris, or perhaps she’s tossing a coin into Rome’s Trevi Fountain. Or, she turns her camera toward the Colosseum to deliver some variation of the same TikTok reproach: “Men used to build things like this, and now I can’t even get a text back.”

The great monuments of Western civilization have been unwittingly cast as backdrops for Gen Z’s lamentations over lost chivalry, gallantry, or drive. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stood before the Acropolis in Athens to offer a considerably more ambitious meditation on the same subject. Striking a more hopeful chord, he spoke of the qualities that once animated the West: “fierce individuality and relentless ambition; daring exploration and invention; a yearning for discovery, for adventure, risk and glory.”

The ancient Greeks, Secretary Rubio explained, possessed “an impatience with the notion of impossibility, chafing at all boundaries and limits, straining to peer into the depths of the unknown.” Refusing to coast through life, they instead sought to understand — then master — the world and persist beyond the next frontier. Their ambitions outlived them, helping establish a civilization whose descendants would take up the hammer and chisel to build upon an invaluable inheritance.

Consider nearly six centuries of craftsmanship that went into Milan’s magnificent Duomo, or the over six centuries that elapsed between Cologne Cathedral’s cornerstone and its completion. Builders devoted their lives to grandeur and endeavor, the fruits of which they knew they could never live to see.

There is something striking about hearing these virtues — ambition, adventure, audacity — extolled in 2026, when much of the national conversation about young men revolves around what men have ceased to be and do.

We are inundated with constant concern — often, to an extent, warranted — that young men are facing unprecedented levels of loneliness, retreating into virtual worlds, and struggling to excel in higher education, the workforce, or romantic relationships.

But the masculine virtues Rubio described transcend centuries and civilizations. That men still orient themselves toward honor, duty, and obligation is crucial for society to endure. The good man’s ambitions are otherworldly, serving that which is outside himself: truth, virtue, civil society, and, most importantly, God.

Across America, men preserve and build upon that which generations before them entrusted to their care. Yet dependability doesn’t go viral, and the algorithm won’t reward doing what’s right when no one’s watching. So the young man who keeps his word, honors his commitments, serves his community, and assumes responsibility for his actions is unlikely to become a social media sensation. Still, the Network of enlightened Women (NeW) seeks to recognize this unheralded excellence through our annual Gentlemen Showcase, a national scholarship contest celebrating young men who exemplify service, respect, kindness, and character.

For 17 years, rather than scouring social media for the loudest or most provocative voice on masculinity, NeW has turned to the community, beckoning friends and friends-of-friends to look close to home and to nominate a gentleman they know. We aren’t interested in follower counts, carefully cultivated personal brands, or the ability to command algorithmic attention. We want to recognize hometown heroes for the ways they serve their communities, pursue chivalry, and treat the least among us when the iPhone cameras are off. Nominations for the Gentlemen Showcase are open through October 17.

Our Gentleman of the Year could be a son who never misses Sunday dinner, a brother always available to help build the IKEA nightstand, a classmate with ample time to help prepare a friend for the test, or a young entrepreneur with the drive to start something from scratch. Perhaps he is a soldier who answers the call to serve, a husband who sacrifices without keeping score, or a friend who picks up the phone by the second ring.

The qualities that distinguish them — ambition, courage, sacrifice — are not altogether different from those Rubio described in Athens.

That young woman standing before Notre-Dame who wonders whether men are still capable of building something that lasts need not look quite so far into the past for her answer. The good men of our generation may yet leave behind monuments of marble or stone. Barcelona’s Sagrada Família is still under construction, after all. Still others are building families, strengthening communities, honoring commitments, and carrying forward the very virtues that made such monuments possible.

Their efforts may never go as viral as a TikTok trend, but we still believe they deserve recognition.
