The United States Army doesn’t need another bureaucrat in its top civilian role who treats the Pentagon as a stepping stone. It needs a combat leader who has already bled for the institution, understands what it means to maneuver a rifle company as well as the Pentagon’s fifth floor, and who won’t flinch when the permanent defense apparatus tries to wait out a reform-minded administration. That man is Sean Parnell.

Parnell is a former Army captain who led one of the most decorated infantry platoons of the Afghanistan war. With the 10th Mountain Division along the Afghan-Pakistan border, his Outlaw Platoon fought for 485 days in some of the nastiest terrain on earth. They killed more than 350 enemy fighters. Eighty-five percent of the platoon earned Purple Hearts. Parnell himself took shrapnel and suffered a fractured skull and a traumatic brain injury that ended his uniformed career. He came home with two Bronze Stars — one for valor — and a Purple Heart. Then he wrote “Outlaw Platoon,” one of the finest military memoirs of the post-9/11 era.

That record meets this moment. The Secretary of the Army is the civilian charged with organizing, training, and equipping the largest and most heavily committed ground force in the American arsenal. In a period of simultaneous high-end competition, regional war, and a long-overdue purge of the cultural rot that infected recruiting, standards, and promotions, the job is not a seminar. It demands real leadership. Parnell has proven that he can lead, from combat outpost to E-ring briefing.

He’s also better placed than anyone else to take on this responsibility. Since February 2025, he has served as assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs and as a senior adviser to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. He knows the personalities, processes, and places where the machine quietly resists civilian direction. There’s no learning curve. That’s precisely why certain people in Washington want him kept out of the role.

I’ve known Sean Parnell for almost 15 years. He is a man of character and a patriot. I’ve watched him handle the most intense pressure from political campaigns and media battles. Now his detractors are relying on old smears to undermine him. After a difficult divorce, he now shares joint custody of his children with his former wife. The people recycling five-year-old allegations from a family-court fight are not newly concerned about child welfare or Parnell’s fitness for command. They’re looking for a veto over a prospective nominee who will actually help Hegseth finish the work of restoring a warfighting culture to the department.

That’s really what’s at issue here. Secretary Hegseth is trying to make the services lethal again, truly accountable, and unapologetic about winning. The Army cannot be the exception. After Dan Driscoll’s resignation, the service is running on an acting secretary while the White House considers names. The whisper campaign against Parnell within some Beltway corridors is not a good-faith exercise. It’s an effort to block him so the system can install someone less committed to Hegseth and President Trump’s agenda.

If any senator has legitimate questions about Parnell’s judgment or approach to policy, those can be aired in the proper forum. The Senate should get its hearing. Fine. Ask him about recruiting, the industrial base, or whether the Army is organized for the wars it is actually going to fight. Ask him what he learned leading men in combat who didn’t have the luxury of holding another pointless meeting or just waiting out the opposition.

Our military is not a think tank. The Army is a force that must close with and destroy the enemy. Sean Parnell has done that work. He has the battle scars, senior Pentagon experience, and character to do it as a civilian leader now. President Trump should nominate him. The Senate should confirm him. And the people trying to stop him should be honest about their real objection: they do not want Hegseth to have an Army secretary who will go all out to finish the job over the next two years.
