On Friday, Portland&#8217;s District Attorney released a charging affidavit detailing their investigation into and plans to charge Michael Forest Reinoehl, an Antifa supporter who allegedly gunned down Aaron “Jay” Danielson, a member of a group called &#8220;Patriot Prayer&#8221; that showed up to counter-protest at a Black Lives Matter demonstration last weekend.
Reinoehl was killed in an altercation with U.S. Marshals who were trying to arrest him for second-degree murder.
The affidavit, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/portlands-antifa-gunman-appeared-to-target-victim-police-say">according to Fox News</a>, notes that Reinoehl &#8220;appeared to be targeting the victim prior to the shooting,&#8221; that he had deliberately armed himself for the protest in case of an interaction that turned violent, and that he &#8220;allegedly hid in a parking garage, waiting for Aaron &#8216;Jay&#8217; Danielson, 39, and another Patriot Prayer member.&#8221;
Reinoehl appeared to shoot twice, once hitting a can of bear spray that one of the Patriot Prayer rally attendees was carrying for protection, and once hitting Danielson.
Investigators also believed that Reinoehl was a de facto security guard for Antifa protesters, which was why he was armed.
&#8220;Michael Forest Reinoehl, a self-described anti-fascist who said he provided security for Portland racial justice protests, appears to have targeted a participant in a pro-Trump rally, emerging from an alcove of a parking garage before firing two gunshots, one that hit the man’s bear spray can and the other that proved fatal,&#8221; <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2020/09/arrest-warrant-against-michael-reinoehl-for-2nd-degree-murder-unlawful-use-of-a-firearm-unsealed.html">Oregon Live added</a>. &#8220;Police found a single Winchester .380-caliber bullet casing on the street, a metal canister of &#8216;Bear Attack Detector&#8217; that had a &#8216;large defect&#8217; in it and a collapsible metal baton just north of Aaron &#8216;Jay&#8217; Danielson’s body, a detective said in the affidavit.&#8221;
The allegations laid out in the affidavit, appear to support the District Attorney&#8217;s decision to charge Reinoehl with second-degree murder; although it appears Reinoehl came armed and prepared to use his weapon, he was not familiar with Danielson before the rally and reportedly targeted Danielson as a victim during the demonstration.
Officers found evidence connecting Reinoehl to the shooting in his home.
&#8220;During a search of Reinoehl’s basement rental unit in a Northeast Portland house on 92nd Avenue, police found ammunition of the same caliber used in Danielson’s shooting and clothing Reinoehl wore that night,&#8221; Oregon Live reported.
Danielson was also armed during the encounter: &#8220;Detectives found a loaded 9mm handgun on Danielson’s waistband and three magazines of 9mm red-tip ammunition in his right cargo pants pocket.&#8221; He was shown carrying a baton in surveillance footage of a pro-Trump &#8220;caravan&#8221; in which he participated.
The DA did not get a chance to pursue a case against Reinoehl. Several law enforcement organizations tracked him to a location outside of Portland, where he apparently engaged them in a firefight. Reinoehl was killed.
The Portland DA says that authorities are still seeking information about Reinoehl&#8217;s final interaction with police.
“The apprehension of a fugitive, in particular one under investigation for murder, is especially dangerous for law enforcement,&#8221; he said.

Attorney General Bill Barr released a statement on Friday lauding the law enforcement effort to track down the left-wing extremist accused of fatally shooting a supporter of President Donald Trump as a &#8220;significant accomplishment&#8221; toward making Portland, Oregon, safer.
Michael Forest Reinoehl, 48, was a “self-described Antifa member suspected of the alleged murder” who “fled to Washington State, where he was located yesterday by members of a fugitive task force led by the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI, and state and local law enforcement partners,” said Barr.
“The tracking down of Reinoehl — a dangerous fugitive, admitted Antifa member, and suspected murderer — is a significant accomplishment in the ongoing effort to restore law and order to Portland and other cities,” he continued. &#8220;I applaud the outstanding cooperation among federal, state, and local law enforcement, particularly the fugitive task force team that located Reinoehl and prevented him from escaping justice. The streets of our cities are safer with this violent agitator removed, and the actions that led to his location are an unmistakable demonstration that the United States will be governed by law, not violent mobs.”
In the hours before the fatal police confrontation, Vice News <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsDWXx5tYfk">published an interview</a> with Reinoehl during which he seemed to admit to the shooting, saying that he “had no choice but to do” what he allegedly did.
“Lots of lawyers suggest that I shouldn’t even be saying anything, but I feel it’s important that the world at least gets a little bit of what’s really going on because there’s been a lot of propaganda put out there,” said Reinoehl.
He declined to provide details about what he did or felt right after the shooting, but said he “realized what had happened” and was “confident I did not hit anyone innocent.”
In an Instagram post, Reinoehl also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/portland-police-probing-antifa-blm-supporter-for-fatal-shooting-right-wing-protester">self-identified</a> as “100% ANTIFA all the way,” and called the “protesters and antifa” supporters his “brothers in arms.” Reinoehl also claimed in the social media post to have once been in the Army, but The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/03/us/michael-reinoehl-arrest-portland-shooting.html">reports</a> that an Army official was unable to find his service record.
“Every Revolution needs people that are willing and ready to fight. There are so many of us protesters that are just protesting without a clue of where that will lead. That’s just the beginning that’s where the fight starts. If that’s as far as you can take it thank you for your participation but please stand aside and support the ones that are willing to fight. I am 100% ANTIFA all the way! I am willing to fight for my brothers and sisters! Even if some of them are too ignorant to realize what antifa truly stands for,” Reinoehl wrote.
“We do not want violence but we will not run from it either! If the police continue to pick on and beat up innocent citizens that are peacefully voicing their objections, it must be met with equal force! We are currently living through a crucial point in Humanities evolution. We truly have an opportunity right now to fix everything. But it will be a fight like no other! It will be a war and like all wars there will be casualties. I was in the army and I hated it. I did not feel like fighting for them would ever be a good cause. Today’s protesters and antifa are my brothers in arms. This is a Cause to fight for This truly is fighting for my country,” he continued.
“I have children that need to live in a world run by Common Sense and human decency. And I will do anything to make sure that happens. Now is the time to change the course of humanity. If we fold now just because they show some Force we will be lost for another hundred years. And I don’t think the planet will let us live that long if we don’t straighten shit up. Law enforcement officials reportedly killed 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinoehl, an antifa and Black Lives Matter extremist, on Thursday night when they closed in to arrest him for allegedly murdering a right-wing protester in Portland.
Officials said that Reinoehl &#8220;was killed during the encounter in Lacey, Wash., southwest of Seattle, when a federal fugitive task force moved to apprehend him,&#8221; The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/03/us/michael-reinoehl-arrest-portland-shooting.html">reported</a>. &#8220;An arrest warrant had been issued by the Portland police earlier Thursday.&#8221;
The Oregonian first <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2020/08/man-under-investigation-in-fatal-shooting-after-pro-trump-rally-allegedly-took-loaded-gun-to-earlier-portland-protest.html">reported</a> that authorities were investigating Reinoehl for his alleged involvement last weekend in the shooting death of right-wing protester Aaron Danielson.
The news came after VICE News teased out a clip on Thursday afternoon of an interview that they did with Reinoehl.
“Lots of lawyers suggest that I shouldn’t even be saying anything, but I feel it’s important that the world at least gets a little bit of what’s really going on because there’s been a lot of propaganda put out there,” Reinoehl said. “I had no choice, I mean, I had a choice, I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color, but I wasn’t gonna do that.”
&#8220;Reinoehl had been a persistent presence at the demonstrations in Portland over recent weeks, helping the protesters with security and suggesting on social media that the struggle was becoming a war where &#8216;there will be casualties,'&#8221; The Times added. &#8220;On July 5 during the protests, Mr. Reinoehl was charged with resisting arrest and possession of a loaded firearm, but the case was later dropped.&#8221;
Reinoehl described himself as &#8220;100% ANTIFA all the way,&#8221; had a black power tattoo on his neck, and had repeatedly expressed support for Black Lives Matter.

Reinoehl’s sister, April Reinoehl, 36, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8686973/Sister-turned-Portland-antifa-brother-reveals-estranged-family.html">told</a> the Daily Mail that her brother has been estranged from the family for years after he allegedly stole medication from their mother and that he was &#8220;a jerk&#8221; who was &#8220;verbally cruel.&#8221;
