Not knowing you’re pregnant is something most women could not even fathom. Childless women, especially, can’t understand how another woman could be pregnant and not know it. Yet examples of the phenomenon are more common than we think.
The latest example comes from South Dakota.
Dannette Giltz began having pain in her abdomen that felt like kidney stones – a health problem she had previously. She also has two other children, so she would know the difference. Yet on August 10, Giltz went to the hospital for kidney stone pain and was instead told she was in labor. She then proceeded to give birth to triplets within the span of four minutes.
ABC 4 News reported that each baby weighed just 4 pounds.
KOTA TV reported that Giltz and her husband, Austin, had been together for 12 years and didn’t plan to have any more children. Their 10-year-old son, however, wanted little siblings.
“One time I seen a shooting star and I wished for a baby brother, and I wished for like two sisters for my little sister because she always wanted a little sister, I knew this day was always going to come,” said their son, Ronnie.
Ronnie apparently got his wish, as the couple was blessed with two girls and a boy.
Dannette said doctors told her to expect twins, so everyone was surprised when she ended up with triplets.
“It was quiet, we thought they were done. He’s over there, kind of like rocking like, thinking of the names and then she’s like well we need another blanket and his reaction is like excuse me, put it back, no, I was told I have twins, I’m not doing triplets. She’s like no, there’s three babies in here, there’s triplets,” Dannette said, according to KOTA TV.
The couple named their children Blaze, Gypsy, and Nikki.
“Once we left the hospital, she’s out of the hospital, I know she’s okay. I’m overwhelmed honestly, it’s still exploding in my head,” Austin told the outlet.
Dannette said she was still in shock over how she didn’t know she was 34 weeks pregnant and how she was able to conceive triplets without medical help.
“You don’t ever see triplets being conceived naturally, let alone going 34 weeks without knowing. So, everyone’s like I can’t believe it, I’m like we’re still in shock, trust me, we know what you mean like I go to the doctor’s thinking I’ll have surgery for kidney stones and end up going into labor with a c-section that night. It’s crazy,” she said.
The couple also told the outlet that they were thankful for the outpouring of support from friends and strangers who donated supplies for their surprise children.
“It’s amazing in a small town how many people will come together for stuff that’s not expected,” Dannette said.
