Speaking with Fox News host Martha MacCallum on “The Story” on Monday, Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro was asked about New York Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s claim that when President Trump criticized her, it was a sexist attack. Shapiro, who had been attacked by Democratic socialist candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for “catcalling” her after he asked her to debate, commented, “Maybe it’s something in the water in New York. If you ask somebody for a debate or discussion it’s sexist; if you criticize their record it’s sexist; no matter what you do, apparently, it’s sexist.”
MacCallum began by showing video of Trump targeting Gillbrand by saying, ‘She’s very aggressive on contributions; she’s not very aggressive on getting things done.”
Appearing on “Face the Nation,” Gillibrand was asked, “Did you hear some of his criticisms, like his hit at you for asking for campaign contributions, as gendered?”
Gillibrand whined, “Yes. That was clearly a sexist smear and it was intended specifically to silence me.”
MacCallum noted that Gillibrand’s GOP opponent in the November election, Chele Farley, had blasted Gillibrand, asserting, “Crying sexism because President Trump assailed her failed record as a senator … is an insult to women who have endured real abuse. The fact is that it took almost 12 years for Gillibrand to pass one bill: the renaming of a post office. That is her record.”
MacCallum asked Shapiro for his thoughts. He responded:
Everything is sexist. Everything in the world. I’m looking for some sort of limiting principle to when the Left will cry “leftism!” because legitimately, apparently — maybe it’s something in the water in New York. If you ask somebody for a debate or discussion it’s sexist; if you criticize their record it’s sexist; no matter what you do, apparently, it’s sexist.
This doesn’t have any sort of purchase with the public anymore; it’s just boring. If you don’t like the criticism, then fight back against the criticism, explain why it’s wrong; explain why the criticism is ignorant. But to claim somebody criticized your record, and therefore it’s because you’re a woman — it’s just off-putting and really, I think, alienating for the broad majority of the American public even though I think Gillibrand will, of course, be fine in the state of New York.
