Last Friday, in another display of the routine abuse police officers have to face while maintaining their composure, an exchange was captured on video of young men taunting and cursing at a New York City police officer, who responded by walking away with other officers so they didn’t wind up being disciplined.
As the New York Post reported, the exchange was caught on cellphone video in Washington Heights. It went like this:
Officer: “I didn’t pull out my gun.”
Two of the taunters responded, “But you was about to.”
Officer: “No, I wasn’t.”
One taunter: “You felt threatened because he’s black.”
Another taunter: “Did you feel threatened because he’s behind you?”
Officer: “All right. Okay,” beginning to walk away.
One taunter: “Get the f*** out of here, bro!” one of the males shouted.
Officer: “This is why you guys live out here like this.“
A taunter: “Like what? What the f*** …”
Another taunter: “You see the address. You come back later, p***y!”
Officer, turning back to them: “I’m right here. I’m right here.”
A taunter: “So take the badge off!”
Officer: “You want tough, you do it now.”
Several taunters: “Take the badge off! Take the badge off! Take the badge off!”
A single taunter: “I will beat the s*** out of you!”
Another taunter: “Suck my d*** then get the f*** out of here! Goodbye!”
Officer: “Go suck your own d***. Bye.”
One taunter called one of the officers, who was Asian-American, “Jackie Chan.”
Other epithets hurled at the cops: “C***s******!” “F***ing pigs!”
As the Post reported, Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins commented that the cops would not discipline the taunters because they were concerned about the Civilian Complaint Review Board. He added, “I spoke to several cops and they didn’t want to get involved in anything or take any police action because they felt if they did the department would go against them.”
