Police officers in Philadelphia were subjected to taunts and physical assault by members of the community during a tense alleged drug bust that ended with six officers being shot, all of whom are thankfully expected to recover.
In shocking video that surfaced online, which has been confirmed by Philadelphia’s CBS affiliate, residents swarm cops, taunting and laughing at them. At least one woman is captured on video shoving an officer. According to a Fox News report, officers were also pelted with unidentified objects.
Alexandria Hoff, a reporter at Philadelphia’s KYW-TV, said she was harassed during live coverage of the standoff and expressed her disbelief over the harassment of officers.
“I mentioned this at 10 and since I was harassed during that live shot, I’ll mention it here too,” she wrote via Twitter. “A major moment of disappointment this evening was watching a crowd of people taunt police officers, laughing and yelling at them in the midst of the gunfire.”
Hoff noted, “I should add — 98% of people here on scene were respectful and concerned. That moment was just such a startling thing to see in the middle of something so chaotic.”
As reported by The Daily Wire on Thursday morning, the standoff closed out after a long seven hours from outside the alleged shooter’s apartment building. The perp, whom the The Daily Wire will not name as a matter of policy, was brought into police custody after reportedly calling his lawyer “in a panic.”
In the wake of the dangerous standoff, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney called for more gun control measures, both at the state and federal level. “This government — both at the federal and state level — don’t wanna do anything about getting these guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals,” he said.
However, the alleged shooter did not have a history of respecting laws at all; he had a total of six convictions and was barred from owning firearms. As noted by The Daily Wire, the suspect has “a lengthy rap sheet dating back to when he was 18 that includes gun, drug, and aggravated assault convictions and kidnapping and attempted murder charges.”
