WATCH: De Blasio Forced To Hold ‘Green New Deal’ Presser In Trump Tower Lobby; Things Go Horribly Wrong

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s press conference Monday promoting his version of the “Green New Deal,” which will “ban classic glass and steel skyscrapers” among other “inefficient” things, didn’t go as planned on Monday after the progressive mayor was forced to take the presser into the public lobby of Trump Tower — where protesters and trolling Trump employees took the opportunity to send a message to the “worst mayor ever.”

Standing in the same place where Donald Trump famously announced his unorthodox, ultimately successful presidential candidacy, de Blasio, who is reportedly considering his own presidential run, threatened to take the Trump family’s money.

“His buildings are one of the biggest polluters in New York City,” de Blasio said of Trump in comments reported by Fox News (video below). “Cut your emissions or we’ll cut something you really care about: We’ll take your money.”

The message was supposed to be delivered in front of the iconic tower, but, as de Blasio put it, the weather failed to “cooperate,” so he was forced to make his threats in Trump territory. The setting proved to be a bit much for the Democratic mayor, whose voice eventually grew hoarse attempting to yell over the noise generated in the lobby.

“Trump Tower staff turned up the dial on the PA system just moments before the mayor entered the 5th Avenue building,” the New York Post reports. “Tony Bennet’s ‘Stranger in Paradise’ and Frank Sinatra’s ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ blasted through the speakers during the event.”

Then the Trump supporters who came to heckle the progressive really got going. Holding signs that read “Failed Mayor,” “Trump 2020,” and “Worst Mayor Ever,” the pro-Trump hecklers traveled up and down the escalators behind the stage, booed, shouted “You suck!” and managed to raise enough of a ruckus to force the mayor to yell out his radical green talking points, while his supporters at times tried to answer the hecklers with their own chants and whistles.

Trying to make light of the rather farcical scene, de Blasio joked about the pro-Trumpers trying to “serenade us.” Along with the humor, the mayor also tried some tough talk: “They’re scared of the truth,” he declared. “Anyone that has a problem with saving the planet, I have a problem with them.”

“Clearly the Trump Organization is a little sensitive to the fact that we’re calling them out for what they are doing to the climate but we are not backing down,” said de Blasio, the Post reports. “We will take your money,” he vowed. “We will hold you accountable.”

But one protester holding an “LGBT for Trump” banner wasn’t impressed with the mayor’s message and accompanying threats, telling the Post, “This is bullsh**.”

As for de Blasio’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez-inspired “Green New Deal,” the official name is The Climate Mobilization Act, and it intends to combat climate change by imposing various regulations and taxes that will supposedly curb carbon emissions by 40% by 2030, particularly taking aim at skyscrapers, the city’s biggest producers of emissions. Columbia University’s State of the Planet blog provides some more details:

The goal of the bill is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2050. While in most parts of the United States transportation is the source of most greenhouse gases, in New York City buildings are our main source of emissions. Last week, by a vote of 45-2 the New York City Council enacted the Climate Mobilization Act, a new law that targets greenhouse gas emissions from large buildings. According to Cecelia Smith-Schoenwalder of U.S. News and World Report, the new law:

“…contains six climate measures that address several topics, including greenhouse gas emissions and the feasibility of replacing all oil and gas burning power plants with renewables and batteries. It would also establish a renewable energy loan program, change the city’s building code to promote construction of wind turbines and require some buildings to cover their roofs with plants or renewable energy like solar panels or small wind turbines…Roughly 70 percent of NYC’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to energy usage from its more than 1 million buildings. The legislation would set emission caps that get higher over time for most buildings over 25,000 square feet”.

The bill requires large buildings to install new energy efficient heating and air conditioning systems as well as better insulated windows. It also provides financing for buildings willing to invest in renewable energy.
