Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” mocked Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) on Thursday for repeatedly using the same “joke” throughout her campaign for president.
Klobuchar revealed that she was officially launching a bid for the presidency in February while appearing in front of a snow-covered crowd in Boom Island Park, Minnesota. As she pledged to win back states that President Donald Trump won during the 2016 election, snow began piling up on both the Minnesota senator and the crowd below.
“Well, it happened again,” Trump replied at the time. “Amy Klobuchar announced that she is running for President, talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice and freezing temperatures.”
“Bad timing,” he continued. “By the end of her speech she looked like a Snowman(woman).”
“Science is on my side, [President Trump]. Looking forward to debating you about climate change (and many other issues),” Klobuchar responded. “And I wonder how your hair would fare in a blizzard?”
However, despite receiving minimal laughs for the joke, the Democratic presidential hopeful has repeatedly referenced the tweet as an example of her humor during her time on the campaign trail.
The “Daily Show” compiled a montage of the numerous times that Klobuchar has echoed the joke.
The three-term senator has a reputation of being particularly surly, especially in private. Only days prior to Klobuchar’s campaign launch, multiple reports surfaced alleging that she is verbally abusive to her congressional staffers and, furthermore, that she creates an office environment fueled by intimidation.
“But behind the doors of her Washington D.C., office, the Minnesota Democrat ran a workplace controlled by fear, anger, and shame, according to interviews with eight former staffers, one that many employees found intolerably cruel. She demeaned and berated her staff almost daily, subjecting them to bouts of explosive rage and regular humiliation within the office,” BuzzFeed News reported in February.
One former staffer stated that Klobuchar would often yell and throw papers, and even recalled a time when another aide was hit with a binder during a fit of rage.
“I cried,” the staffer told BuzzFeed. “I cried, like, all the time.”
Another report emerged weeks later detailing a story where a former staffer prepared a salad for the senator to eat during a flight in 2008. As the story goes, the staffer dropped the fork and was unable to find a new one prior to take off. Consequently, after Klobuchar castigated the staffer over the accident, she took out a comb from her bag and began to eat her salad with it. When she was finished, she demanded the staffer clean the comb.
She has denied the accuracy of the reports.
Klobuchar is currently considered to be a second- or third-tier candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. While she is one of only ten candidates to have qualified to participate in the upcoming Democratic National Committee (DNC) debate, she is polling with less than 1% national support, on average.
