In a viral video, a Christian convert and former drug user said that she “would be dead” if her church had remained closed due to COVID-19.

Jennifer Scott — who attends Trinity Bible Chapel in Ontario, Canada — testified before her baptism that personal interactions with other believers led to her salvation. Last year, Trinity Bible Chapel incurred over $100,000 in fines for refusing to shut its doors in defiance of the Reopening Ontario Act, as well as the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

“Before Christ, I was a very angry person, and filled with fear, doubt, and self-pity. I was constantly seeking avenues of filling the hole in me that only Jesus could fill,” Scott began, explaining that she started drinking and using drugs at the age of 14. “It began with marijuana and ended with smoking crack cocaine, and intravenous drug use. I was a slave to darkness.”

“The gospel is the good news that we have salvation through Jesus Christ,” she said. “God came down in the form of a sinless man, Jesus, and poured out His wrath onto Him, that He might spare us eternity in hell, if only we believe that He is the Son of God — the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and the Truth, the Way, and the Life.”

Scott testified that “Jesus never stopped His pursuit of me” despite various backslidings into drug use. However, it was an in-person prayer meeting at Trinity Bible Chapel that began the end of substance abuse in her life.

“Most recently, I was smoking and shooting seven grams of cocaine a day, and my son asked me to come to a prayer meeting at Trinity,” Scott continued. “In my small group, I asked for prayer to help me stop. I left a comment on one of Pastor Jacob’s sermons on YouTube. Pastor Jacob took the time to find out who I was, and tracked me down and called me to pray for me, and to encourage me to keep coming to church.”

“The next day, I got a phone call that there was an upcoming bed available at a sober living house in Cambridge. I kept coming to Trinity in the meantime,” she said. “I have been clean and sober now for over seven months, moved into my own apartment, and the body of Christ here at Trinity has helped me with furniture and other blessings.”

“None of these things would have happened if Trinity closed its doors and was solely online. I know for a fact that I’d be dead right now if God had not used this church in my life,” she concluded.

As Scott’s video gained virality on Twitter — shared alongside the hashtag “#OpenYourChurch” by Trinity Bible Chapel — pastors and commentators began reacting.

“Jaw on floor,” Grace Bible Theological Seminary provost Owen Strachan said.

“In these discouraging times in Canada, this wonderful testimony about God’s grace placed a massive smile on my face,” Slow To Write blogger Samuel Sey added. “Praise the Lord.”

“Praise God!” said Grace Baptist Church pastor Tom Ascol, who also leads Founders Ministries.

Canadian pastors are now warning that a new “conversion therapy” bill recently passed by parliament will likely ban them from teaching that homosexuality and transgenderism are sinful. In response, John MacArthur — longtime senior pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles — is asking for ministers across the United States to join him in preaching about God’s standard for sexuality on Sunday.

“I am eager to support our Canadian brothers and to preach on biblical sexual morality on January 16, and I invite you as a faithful pastor to do the same,” MacArthur wrote. “We are all well-aware of the evil power and destructive influence of the homosexual and transgender ideology. Our government is bent on not only normalizing this perversion, but also legalizing it, and furthermore criminalizing opposition to it.”
