At a town hall meeting on Wednesday night, over 60 fired-up residents of Escondido, California voiced their passionate opinions on the state’s sanctuary city policy before a city council vote concerning the Trump administration’s lawsuit against it. Opponents of the sanctuary policy, including U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, argue that it’s unconstitutional and a detriment to public safety.

According to Fox 5 San Diego, Escondido City Council voted 4-1 in favor of filing a legal brief in support of the Trump administration’s lawsuit. “The council decided to file a legal brief in support of the lawsuit, which challenges the legality of three state laws enacted last year. Among them is a statute that limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities,” Fox 5 reports.

The hotly-contested pre-vote town hall included the voices of legal immigrants outraged over the sanctuary policy that shields local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE.

“I came to this country 45 years ago with me and my mother,” said one man in a “Make America Great Again” hat. “Forty-five years ago, we were not offered sanctuary. We were not offered an easier, softer way. We were told ‘You have to be an American citizen, and here’s what you have to do.’ And we did it.”

“There is nothing in the Constitution that says that one rogue state can make policies that affect the whole nation,” said one supporter of the Trump lawsuit at a pre-meeting rally.

Mayor Sam Abed argued that supporting the Trump lawsuit was “the right thing to do.”

“I was elected mayor to uphold the Constitution and to keep our community safe. I am committed to do that, and that’s what the council did today,” he said.

One man in favor of the sanctuary policy asked, “By deporting my family, is that the reward I get for my hard work?”

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, too, has been vocal in his support for the sanctuary policy, opposing local officials who are working to fight the policy alongside Trump.

According to Fox News Insider, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors will hold a vote on April 17 “to determine if the county will follow Escondido’s action.”
