NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who was infamously decried as a “murderer” at CNN’s out-of-control townhall on gun control and school safety following the horrific Parkland shooting, found an opportunity to actually praise a CNN host for a line of questioning on the hot button issue.
At a little more even-handed CNN town hall on school safety Wednesday evening, moderator Chris Cuomo pushed back on the arguments of Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Cuomo’s pushback came in response to the congresswoman’s ham-handed attempt to dismiss the effectiveness of heightened security in preventing shootings.
Santa Fe High School shooting survivor Alexis Wilson was given a chance to ask about strengthening security measures at schools. “Where does the government stand on arming and training our teachers, much in the way we use air marshals on airplanes?” asked Wilson.
Pelosi responded by summarily dismissing the idea, saying simply that she and her colleagues in the Democratic Party “do not think that is the solution,” and adding, “I do not support arming teachers and the rest.” That’s when Cuomo weighed in.
“There’s a little bit of an either-or problem with how we’re trying to approach solutions,” said Cuomo. “The building we’re in now, the building you work in, the point of entry there is secure. You don’t walk in with a trench coat with a shotgun underneath your jacket, and get in. It doesn’t happen, you know this. … Why can’t that be part of the equation? Talk about universal background checks, fine. Talk about mental health, how to identify them, money for treatment. But why either-or? Why not make the schools safer?”
Pelosi struggled to find a coherent response and instead returned to her vague assertion that we need to “stop people from having guns who shouldn’t have guns in the first place.”
