On Monday, the streaming platform Twitch was slammed after referring to Women’s History Month as “Womxn’s History Month.”

“March is Womxn’s History Month,” Twitch wrote in a tweet that was later deleted. “Join us in celebrating and supporting all the Womxn creating their own worlds, building their communities, and leading the way on Twitch.”

Twitch wrote on a blog post:

Twitch is a place where creators can build their world and have their voice heard. And women are doing that live, every day.

Building channels. Building communities. Building the future of gaming. And inspiring all of us while doing it. Including the next generation of women streamers.

So this month, join us in celebrating women creating their own worlds, building their communities, and leading Twitch to the next level.

Support Women Creators Every Day This Month

Every day in March we’re raising up women and their communities  on Twitch. From the newest up and coming voices to the trailblazers, check out the front page to see a different featured streamer, starting right now. You can find the full schedule below. Just double check the start time (they’re all in PT), jump into chat, and join their world.

Twitch got hit from both the political Left and the political Right, as the Daily Caller reported. Congressional candidate Robby Starbuck wrote, “Womxn is not a real word. They’re called women and they’re born with XX chromosomes + a female reproductive system. If you don’t know that then you should return to middle school ASAP.”

“LGBT communities online called the change transphobic because it suggested trans women were not women,” the BBC reported.

Twitch later apologized to the LGBTQIA+ community, tweeting:

While we originally wanted to use a word that acknowledges the shortcoming of gender-binary language, after hearing directly from you, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community on Twitch, we will be using the spelling “women” moving forward. We want to assure you that we have, and will continue to, work with the LGBTQIA+ community. We’re still learning. Our good intentions don’t always equate to positive impact, but we’re committed to growing from these experiences, doing better, and ensuring we’re inclusive to all.

“According to dictionary.com, which began defining ‘womxn’ in 2019, the term is considered ‘an alternative spelling [of women] to avoid the suggestion of sexism perceived in the sequences m-a-n and m-e-n, and to be inclusive of trans and nonbinary women,’” the New York Daily News reported.

In June 2020, Twitch banned former President Trump. “Trump’s account was banned for ‘hateful conduct that was aired on stream, and Twitch says the offending content has now been removed,” The Verge reported.

A Twitch spokesperson stated, “Like anyone else, politicians on Twitch must adhere to our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. We do not make exceptions for political or newsworthy content, and will take action on content reported to us that violates our rules.”
