The public feud between “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski and President Donald Trump got “bloody” on Thursday after Trump took to Twitter for one of his trademark personal attacks, slamming Brzezinski as “low I.Q.” and telling the world that she “was bleeding badly from a face-lift” on New Year’s Eve. The host and her network have since replied to the “sad” attack.
Though the “Morning Joe” duo were at one point some of the only personalities on MSNBC that were at all somewhat fair to Trump during the Republican primaries, the relationship melted down in August after Trump, annoyed by a critical “Morning Joe” segment on him, tweeted, “Tried watching low-rated @Morning_Joe this morning, unwatchable! @morningmika is off the wall, a neurotic and not very bright mess! … Some day, when things calm down, I’ll tell the real story of @JoeNBC and his very insecure long-time girlfriend, @morningmika. Two clowns!”
On Thursday, Trump blasted Brzezinski again, this time airing an embarrassing detail from something that allegedly happened New Year’s Eve:
“I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came…to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!” he wrote.
Brzezinski quickly responded with her own, more succinct insult mocking Trump for something equally as petty: his “little hands,” which some of Trump’s critics have tried to use to get under his skin.
The “Morning Joe” co-host’s tweet was soon followed by an official statement from her employer:
“It’s a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying, and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job,” the network stated.
The Daily Beast notes that MSNBC’s head of PR also got in on the action, tweeting, “Never imagined a day when I would think to myself, ‘it is beneath my dignity to respond to the President of the United States.’”
Just as the media has predictably turned this into more evidence of Trump’s “sexism,” the White House has answered with its standard defense: Trump “fights fire with fire.”
So has First Lady Melania, who said simply that when her husband’s attacked, “he will punch back 10 times harder.”
Well, no one’s going to argue with that.
The real question, of course, is the same one that comes up repeatedly with Trump and his unorthodox/unpresidential Twitter habits: is this personal attack going to help or hurt his agenda? It’s really hard to see how this helps anything. Closing thoughts on that point from Daily Wire‘s Ben Shapiro:
It’s worthwhile noting that if you would like a border wall, Obamacare repeal, tax reform…this doesn’t help in any way. Unlike Trump’s attacks on the credibility of CNN, which are based in evidence of CNN’s own misbehavior and bias, this latest slap is just petty and silly and ridiculous. It actually lends credibility to Trump’s political enemies.
Trump is in the midst of the most important legislative fight of his young presidency – the fight over Obamacare repeal. Trump needs to be able to use his leverage and popularity to push wavering senators. Now we will be dragged into a week-long sideshow about whether it’s sexist to attack a woman’s face lift for no reason other than political disagreement (hint: Trump would say the same about a dude).
