“[Profiling Muslims is] not the worst thing to do,” said Donald Trump about measures to combat Islamic terrorism. “I hate the concept of profiling, but we have to use common sense. We’re not using common sense.”
Speaking with CBS’s John Dickerson for a phone interview with Face The Nation, Trump called for increased “profiling” of Muslims in America in light of last week’s Islamic terrorist attack targeting LGBT persons at a nightclub in Orlando.
“Well, I think profiling is something that we’re going to have to start thinking about as a country. And other countries do it,” said Trump. “And you look at Israel and you look at others, and they do it. And they do it successfully. And I hate the concept of profiling. But we have to start using common sense, and we have to use — we have to use our heads.”
Mosques were previously surveilled in New York City, said Trump, indirectly criticizing the city’s mayor.
In 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s placed an “independent civilian” lawyer in an oversight position for the Big Apple’s counterterrorism operations. The socialist mayor ended various counterterrorism measures of surveillance and intelligence gathering agitation from left-wing “civil rights” groups such as the ACLU.
“Political correctness” said Trump, was getting Americans killed. The Islamic terrorist attack in San Bernardino, implied Trump, was connected to the left-wing ethos. A San Bernardino resident chose not to report Muslim men he viewed as suspicious for fear of engaging in “racial profiling.”
Opposition to “political correctness” has been framed by Trump as a pillar of his presidential campaign, with him and his political surrogates often describing the left-wing political disposition as dangerous.
Equivocating on the question of whether persons on terror watch lists or no-fly lists should have their Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms infringed upon, Trump said he is “dealing with the NRA.”
