On Wednesday night, Donald Trump made another inflammatory remark sure to elicit condemnation, calling President Obama “the founder of ISIS.”
Speaking at a rally in Sunrise, Florida, Trump blustered, “ISIS is honoring President Obama. He is the founder of ISIS. He founded ISIS. And, I would say the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton.” Only a week before, speaking in Florida, Trump said Clinton “should get an award from them as the founder of ISIS.”
Trump repeatedly used Obama’s full name on Wednesday, consistently referring to him as Barack Hussein Obama.
He was the founder of ISIS, absolutely. The way he removed our troops — you shouldn’t have gone in. I was against the war in Iraq. Totally against it. That mistake was made. It was a horrible mistake — one of the worst mistakes in the history of our country. We destabilized the Middle East and we’ve been paying the price for it for years. He was the founder — absolutely, the founder. In fact, in sports they have awards. He gets the most valuable player award. Him and Hillary. I mean, she gets it too. I gave her cofounder if you really looked at this speech. But he and Hillary get the most valuable player award having to do with Iraq, and having to do with the ISIS situation, or as he would call it, ISIL. He calls it ISIL because nobody else does and he probably wants to bother people by using another term, whether it’s more accurate or not.
ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria; ISIL, which stands for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, connotes taking over everything east of the Mediterranean Sea. As ISIL has made it clear they want to take over far more than Iraq and Syria, ISIL is actually a more accurate name for the group. ISIS is commonly used simply because that was the name initially used by the media.
Trump continued “Is there something wrong with saying that? Are people complaining that I said he was the founder of ISIS?” He added. “Look, all I do is tell the truth. I’m a truth teller. All I do is tell the truth.”
“ISIS is honoring President Obama. He is the founder of ISIS.”
ISIS, an offshoot of al-Qaida, was founded by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian militant terrorist who was killed in a US airstrike in Baghdad in 2006.
But Trump is essentially correct; Barack Obama took ISIS from the “JV squad” to a worldwide threat to Westerners by his initial inaction and refusal to take the group seriously.
