President Trump came out swinging against abortion in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday night, where he kicked off his campaign for reelection in 2020.
According to LifeNews, the president told a “rousing crowd of 20,000” that his administration will continue to fight for the lives of unborn children and blasted Democrats for electing to make Americans pay for abortions with their tax dollars.
“Virtually every top Democrat also now supports taxpayer-funded abortion right up to the moment of birth – ripping babies straight from the mothers’ womb,” the president said. “Leading Democrats have even opposed measures to prevent the execution of children after birth. You saw that in Virginia. Republicans believe that every life is a sacred gift from God. That is why I have asked Congress to prohibit extreme late-term abortions.”
In mentioning Virginia, the president was referencing comments made by Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, who issued one of the most gruesome defenses of abortion when he said that a baby born alive could be left to die on the table if the mother did not want it. Northam’s full comment:
When we talk about third-trimester abortions, these are done with the consent of the mother, with the consent of physicians, more than one physician by the way, and it’s done in cases where there may be severe deformities, there may be a fetus which is non-viable. So in this particular example, if the mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen, the infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if this is what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physician and the mother.
President Trump has strongly stepped up the pro-life rhetoric in 2019, beginning with his State of the Union Address where he declared that unborn children are made in the image and likeness of God, worthy of government protection.
“There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our nation saw in recent days,” President Trump said. “Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb moments from birth. These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get the chance to share their love and dreams with the world.”
In response to President Trump kicking off his 2020 campaign with a gesture to the pro-life movement, Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser told LifeNews, “President Trump has been consistent and fearless in calling out extremist Democrats’ support for abortion on demand through birth and even infanticide, drawing a clear contrast with his own record of pro-life leadership.”
“We thank him for his commitment to protecting babies born alive in failed abortions and ending the cruelty of late-term abortion when unborn children can feel excruciating pain, and we join him in urging Congress to pass these popular bills,” she said.
