Ted Cruz Sounds The Alarm Over Immigration Deal

On Fox & Friends Thursday morning, former presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) sounded the alarm over the bipartisan immigration deal being hammered out in Congress, which he said in its current state doesn’t make “any sense” and is positioned “dramatically to the left of where Barack Obama was.”

“Mark my words, if Republican majorities in Congress pass citizenship for millions of people in amnesty, I think it is quite likely we will lose both houses of Congress and Speaker Nancy Pelosi will impeach President Trump,” said Cruz.

Cruz made the comments in response to a question about his view of the current immigration plans being voted on, which President Trump has threatened to veto.

“The plans before the Senate right now, I think they don’t make any sense at all,” said Cruz. “We should not be granting citizenship for people here illegally. For whatever reason you have a whole lot of Republicans eager to propose granting citizenship for 1.8 million people here illegally.”

Asked if he supports Trump’s “four pillars,” Cruz said the plan to expand DACA is outflanking Obama to the left.

“Listen that is dramatically to the left of where Barack Obama was,” said Cruz. “Barack Obama in DACA — which was executive amnesty, it was illegal, it was unconstitutional — DACA covered 690,000 people. Why on earth are Republicans trying to more than double, nearly triple that from 690,000 to 1.8 million?”

“Because it’s a more accurate number,” Brian Kilmeade responded.

“Tell that to the steelworkers. Tell that to the truck drivers. Tell that to the American people we promised we wouldn’t do amnesty,” said Cruz.

“Secondly, DACA, under Obama did not provide citizenship,” the senator continued. “For the life of me, I do not understand — DACA was a work permit; there’s no citizenship whatsoever. Why would Republicans be galloping to the left of Barack Obama?”

Kilmeade pushed back again, saying that it appears to be necessary for the GOP to get their border security agenda passed.

“Mark my words, if Republican majorities in Congress pass citizenship for millions of people in amnesty, I think it is quite likely we will lose both houses of Congress and Speaker Nancy Pelosi will impeach President Trump,” said Cruz.

When Kilmeade said that “70%” of Americans want a “pathway” to citizenship, Cruz dismissed it as fake news.

“No, I don’t think it is accurate,” said Cruz. “Those polls are done, those polls are deceptive. I can tell you the American people don’t want amnesty. We want the border secured … It is a profound mistake for Republicans to grant amnesty and path to citizenship for millions of people here illegally. And it’s not being faithful to promises we made to the voters.”

Asked what he thinks is motivating Democrats on the bipartisan negotiations, Cruz effectively said “fury” and their hatred for Trump. Their commitment to telling Trump and Republicans “no” is so strong, he said, that they might end up saving Republicans from their own foolishness.

As for the 2018 elections, the big question for Republicans, said Cruz, is if they can get conservatives to “show up.” What is sure to keep conservatives home is granting illegal immigrants amnesty. “If you want to design in a laboratory legislation to keep millions of conservatives at home, it would be what is being proposed right now,” said Cruz.

Before their discussion of the immigration deal, Cruz and the Fox & Friends hosts discussed the horrific mass shooting in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday.

Immigration discussion begins around the 3:40 mark:
