The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has documented over 1.3 million identify thefts committed by illegal aliens given Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) from 2011 to 2016, reveals a CNS News report.
It’s unclear how many, if any, of the illegals committing the identity theft have been referred by the department for prosecution.
Additionally, the IRS found about 1.2 million other cases of so-called “refund fraud” committed by illegals. “In these cases, a tax return was filed by using a Social Security number that either belonged to someone else or was made up, according to the report,” notes The Blaze.
“We identified 1,227,579 electronically filed tax returns, processed in FY 2017 through April 18, 2017, in which the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number on the return does not match the Social Security Number on the Form W-2,” said the treasury inspector general for Tax Administration.
“Note that a Social Security Number may have been used on Form W-2 for more than one of these returns,” he added.
From 2011 to 2016, the IRS has reportedly placed an “employment identity theft marker” on 1,346,485 taxpayer accounts.
When asked by CNS News how many illegals participating in such crimes have been referred to law enforcement for investigation and prosecution, the IRS answered, “We do not have this information.”
Victims of the identify thefts are reportedly being notified, “but the majority of those whose identities were stolen for employment have no idea it happened,” The Blaze notes.
“Most employment identity theft victims have not been notified that their identities are being used by others for employment,” reads the TIGTA report.
