Senators To Read FBI Report In Secret; White House ‘Confident’ Senate Will Confirm Judge Kavanaugh

By  Joseph Curl

The White House now has the FBI report on its investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and said Thursday it is “confident” he will be confirmed by the Senate.

“The White House has received the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s supplemental background investigation into Judge Kavanaugh, and it is being transmitted to the Senate,” White House spokesman Raj Shah said.

“With Leader [Mitch] McConnell’s cloture filing, Senators have been given ample time to review this seventh background investigation. This is the last addition to the most comprehensive review of a Supreme Court nominee in history, which includes extensive hearings, multiple committee interviews, over 1,200 questions for the record and over a half million pages of documents. With this additional information, the White House is fully confident the Senate will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.”

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House “has found no corroboration of the allegations of sexual misconduct” against Kavanaugh “after examining interview reports from the FBI’s latest probe into the judge’s background, according to people familiar with the matter.”

The FBI report has been sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley took to Twitter on Thursday to lay out what comes next — and to explain why Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, were not interviewed by the bureau.

“Sources briefed on the schedule said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, will be the first to see it at 8 a.m., followed by ranking Democratic member Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., at 9 a.m.” NBC News reported.

On Wednesday evening, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed for cloture on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the vacancy on the Supreme Court, which means that after the vote on cloture by the Senate on Friday, there will be up to 30 hours of debate followed by a final confirmation vote as early as Saturday.

President Trump on Thursday weighed in, saying “The harsh and unfair treatment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh is having an incredible upward impact on voters. The PEOPLE get it far better than the politicians. Most importantly, this great life cannot be ruined by mean & despicable Democrats and totally uncorroborated allegations!”

Meanwhile, senators will read the FBI report in secret and it will not be released to the public. “All 100 Senators will have access to the new information, but not their staffs. There also are 10 Judiciary Committee staffers who have access to the secret Kavanaugh file, which is a paper report — there are no PDFs or emails of it. And it will not be made public,” NBC reported.

Others senators will have access to the report afterward. Allowing all 100 senators to view the report if they want to in a timely fashion is a priority because of McConnell’s quick timeline for a vote of the full Senate.

There are not multiple copies of the background investigation file, and senators cannot go pick it up and bring it home with them. They need to either go to a secure area designated in the Judiciary Committee offices, or a designated staffer can bring it to a senator and then return it. …

The information in the background investigation file is not marked top secret or classified, but it is not to be leaked or even characterized. Senators are “not allowed to share any details whatsoever,” a committee aide said.
