The Supreme Court has asked for significant extra funding for police protection in the wake of abortion activists targeting SCOTUS judges because of the overturn of Roe v. Wade.

The Supreme Court submitted its budget request to Congress last week and asked for an increase of $5,897,000 for additional security.

This request would expand security activities conducted by Supreme Court Police to protect the Justices, SCOTUS wrote. “On-going threat assessments show evolving risks that require continuous protection. Additional funding would provide for contract positions, eventually transitioning to full-time employees, that will augment capabilities of the Supreme Court police force and allow it to accomplish its protective mission.”

In May 2022, POLITICO released a leaked draft opinion for Dobbs v. Jackson that indicated SCOTUS would overturn Roe. The next month, a California man was arrested near the home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and charged with attempted murder. The assailant was “upset” by the leaked draft indicating that SCOTUS would overturn Roe, according to an affidavit, which said that he “stated that he began thinking about how to give his life a purpose and decided that he would kill the Supreme Court Justice.”

Abortion activists also targeted the homes of Kavanaugh and Justice Amy Coney Barrett for protests. In October Justice Samuel Alito stated, “The leak also made those of us who were thought to be in the majority in support of overruling Roe and [Planned Parenthood v. Casey] targets for assassination, because it gave people a rational reason to think they could prevent that from happening by killing one of us.”

A May 13, 2022, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memo obtained by Axios revealed that government officials were investigating threats to the justices, the clerks, places of worship, and abortion clinics.

These threats “are likely to persist and may increase leading up to and following the issuing of the Court’s official ruling,” the memo said.

Just prior to the overturn of Roe in late June 2022, pro-abortion protesters marched in front of Barrett’s home wearing “blood” stained clothing and carrying toy dolls.

“We aren’t incubators! Youth procession delivered baby dolls to Amy Coney Barrett. We aren’t protesting to change the minds of women-hating fascists. We’re calling on the pro-choice majority, on YOU, to get in the streets to STOP #SCOTUS from overturning Roe,” the Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights Twitter account posted along with a video of the protest.
