Rush Limbaugh: There Won’t Be A ‘President Oprah,’ But Not Why You Might Think

By  James Barrett

On his radio show this week, Rush Limbaugh took a moment to address all the buzz around the idea of a “President Oprah,” over which her fellow celebrities and Democrats worked themselves into a frenzy after her much celebrated #MeToo/#TimesUp speech at the Golden Globes. Despite flash polls predictably showing Oprah easily vanquishing the Left’s presidential nightmare incarnate, Donald J. Trump, and celebrity after celebrity pledging their fealty to the queen of media, Limbaugh threw some cold water on “Oprah 2020.”

Oprah Winfrey will not be president, Limbaugh said, but not because she couldn’t get a lot of votes or because she doesn’t have the gravitas or she can’t take the heat — but because the leaders of her own party won’t let her.

“The fact that the Democrats and the media, the Left, are all-in on Oprah proves how vacant their party actually is,” said Limbaugh. “But then you have to ask yourself, there are real Democrats, elected Democrats, Washington, D.C. Democrats who want this gig, they want to be president, they want to run for president, they want to beat Trump. How many people have the Democrats told to stand aside for Obama in 2008? How many Democrats were told to stand aside for Hillary in 2008? That’s the question.”

The point, explained Limbaugh, is that the Democratic ruling class are more concerned about promoting their own interests than the party’s. Their all-pervasive sense of entitlement will thwart even as popular a figure as Oprah, if they can help it.

“Are they gonna stand aside again? When we get to 2020, are the Democrats gonna say to all of their proven electoral heavyweights, ahem, stand aside for Oprah?” said Limbaugh. “I’m not so sure.”

Later in the segment, Limbaugh took a caller, “Ray from Fayetteville, Arkansas,” who wanted to talk about “the Oprah for president garbage.” Ray noted that Winfrey’s stirring declaration that the “Time’s Up” for sexual harassers comes on the heels of her stumping for an enabler of an infamous alleged sexual predator and decades of silence on the issue.

“If you remember, back in the summer — I believe it was early summer — of 2016, The Oprah fully endorsed Hillary Clinton for president,” said Ray. “Hillary Clinton, the same woman who knew her husband had sexual assaulted women while in the White House, and then went on national TV to disparage and undermine these same women who made these allegations against her husband, Bill Clinton. … Where has Oprah been for the last 18, 20 years? Did she just finally pull her head out of the sand?”

“I don’t think that if Oprah’s even thinking about this, that she thinks Bill Clinton or Hillary would be a factor if she runs,” Limbaugh replied, adding later that leftist celebrities are “not accustomed to hypocrisy attaching itself to them.”

“She’s got a bigger problem than Hillary, I think, with all the pictures that she’s got of kissing and snuggling up to Harvey Weinstein,” said Limbaugh.

Limbaugh is not the only conservative talk radio host to bring up Winfrey’s relationship with Weinstein and her decades of silence on the sexual misconduct of her fellow celebrities and Democrats. Author and radio host Mark Levin also addressed the “hypocrisy” angle, but in his own famously salty style. In Levin’s opinion, Oprah’s much ballyhooed speech wasn’t great, it was “grotesque.”

“Why did it take a story about Weinstein to begin to unravel the yarn ball here?” asked Levin. “And Oprah Winfrey goes to the microphone like she’s making some profound statement. She made no statement about the problem that persists. In a left-wing town controlled by Democrats, controlled by Hollywood, controlled by their producers, their directors, their actors, their actresses … and she talks about Jim Crow, not Harvey Weinstein, who she was fast friends with.”
