Romney Responds To Mueller Report: ‘Sickened At The Extent And Pervasiveness Of Dishonesty’

On Friday, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) released a statement on Twitter concerning the newly released Mueller report.

It is good news that there was insufficient evidence to charge the President of United States with having conspired with a foreign adversary or having obstructed justice. The alternative would have taken us through a wrenching process with the potential for constitutional crisis. The business of government can move on.

Even so, I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office of the land, including the president. I am also appalled that, among other things, fellow citizens working in a campaign for president welcomed help from Russia – including information that had been illegally obtained; that none of them acted to inform American law enforcement; and that the campaign chairman was actively promoting Russian interests in Ukraine.

Reading the report is a sobering revelation of how far we have strayed from the aspirations and principles of the founders.

As of publication, Romney’s statement has more than 57,000 “likes,” and has been retweeted approximately 13,700 times.

The comments below Romney’s statement are a mixed bag:

Romney you are a traitor. I’m disgusted by your fake integrity. You were such a trash candidate that you gave America Obama. You wish you were half the man Trump is.

These words will become the most important words you ever spoke if you follow up with a primary challenge to Donald Trump. We need Republicans of great integrity to act with energy and determination to restore respect to our two party system.

Just switch parties and shut up already. You don’t see what the media and the Democrats are doing to this man on a daily basis. You’re a disgrace!

Thank you for being a voice of reason and patriotism.

I am sickened that I voted for you and once considered you an honorable person.

The comments on this tweet are a great illustration of the current state of politics in the US. A moderate stance just pisses off the polarized bases of BOTH parties. Politicians know this, and thus are forced to pivot policy to placate their partisan base.

Sen. Romney isn’t the only conservative/libertarian voicing concern over the president’s behavior. On Thursday, Fox News Senior Judicial Analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano stated (emphasis added):

On obstruction of justice, that is interference with an investigation or a prosecution for an improper motive, the president is not exactly cleared because the report lists 11 instances in which the president attempted, or attempted to have others attempt to interfere with the investigation of his own campaign.

Now, the president can fire the director of the FBI and the president can tell the Attorney General who he wants prosecuted and who he doesn’t, but if he makes those decisions for a self-serving purpose, then the decision is not protected presidential behavior, it’s arguably obstruction of justice. What did Bob Mueller find? He found 11 of these instances.

Depending on how you look at them, it might be enough to prosecute, but the Attorney General has decided it’s not enough to prosecute.

But it did show a venal, amoral, deceptive Donald Trump instructing his aides to lie and willing to help them do so.

That’s not good in a President of the United States. It’s also not good here in New York City where he’s still under investigation for financial crimes. And I’m sorry to say the Donald Trump portrayed in the Robert Mueller report is the same one portrayed by Michael Cohen, who was his lawyer for ten years.

It appears that the divide already defined between enthusiastic supporters of the president and those who support him only because they believe him to be the lesser of evils is only going to sharpen in the aftermath of the Mueller findings.
