Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) slammed Democrats over their reaction to the decision to end the House Intelligence Committee investigation of alleged Russia collusion with the 2016 Trump campaign.
Nunes, who serves as chairman of the committee, told “Fox & Friends” that the Democrats were virtue signaling over the end of the investigation while ignoring Hillary Clinton’s failed campaign connections to Russia.
“They try to rewrite history,” he said on Monday.
“Well, it happens on a daily basis that I get accused by the Democrats of [hampering the investigation],” Nunes said.
“It’s been happening even before the Russia investigation began publicly. So right after I was named to the Trump transition team, I began getting attacked,” he said. Nunes emphasized that the Democrats and their allies in the media began accusing him of shilling for Trump. He points out, “the reality is that I had warned the Obama administration in early 2016 about this.”
Nunes said it was time to move on from the investigation and focus on other matters, specifically naming the recent bombing attacks in the state of Texas.
“If you look at the situation in Austin right now, it’s very fluid,” he said. “We need to get our FBI and our intelligence agencies working on real problems and get them away from what they’re doing now, which is, it looks likes spinning in circles. We spent 14 months on this investigation looking for collusion. We didn’t find any. …”
According to Nunes, the House Intelligence Committee could find no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of President Trump’s campaign, despite the ongoing investigation.
“We interviewed many dozens of witnesses, many people right around the president. Almost nearly everybody who was involved in the campaign. All of them have testified under oath that they had no contacts with the Russians,” Nunes said.
He did take a moment to criticize Donald Trump, Jr., for arranging a meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower. “If you look at the one example of which was, I think, bad judgment,” he said. “I think they met with a Russian lawyer where it had to do with Russian adoptions.”
He also criticized the Democrats for refusing to look into their own candidate’s campaign, despite mounting evidence that there were some coincidental connections to foreign entities.
“We did find clear links between the Russians and the Hillary Clinton campaign, which nobody seems to care about,” Nunes said.
