PATHETIC: University Removes Scale From Gym After ‘Triggering’ Students

By  Amanda Prestigiacomo

Social Justice Warriors have placed their crosshairs on the ever-triggering scale, which makes perfect sense since scales inform us of objective facts and we all know how the Left feels about those.

Carleton University has made the decision to remove the weight scale from their campus gym after a student complained about being “triggered” by the device … which, presumably, she chose to step on. A sign where the scale once stood explains that the university’s choice to remove the scale is “in keeping with current fitness and social trends.

Or, more accurately, “in keeping with pathetic social justice safe space trends.”

Carleton freshman Samar El-Faki explained via Facebook that the scale is especially “triggering” to students with eating disorders.

“Scales are very triggering,” said El-Faki. “I think people are being insensitive because they simply don’t understand. They think eating disorders are a choice when they are actually a serious illness.”

The Canadian university’s health and wellness programs manager, Bruce Marshall, agreed with the choice to remove the scale.

“We don’t believe being fixated on weight has any positive effect on your health and well-being,” Marshall told The Charlatan via email. “The body is an amazing machine and even when we are dieting and training it will often find a homeostasis at a certain weight.”

“It takes weeks, even months to make a permanent change in your weight. So why obsess about it?” he added. “Why not look at other indicators?”

Of course, if people want to look at other, perhaps better, indicators of health and wellness, as noted by Marshall, they can and should. But if that’s the issue, why not simply offer those other measurement forms in addition to the weight scale?

Clearly, the move to nix the scale was a way to shield snowflakes from a truth which makes them uncomfortable. This is not how the real world works. Do restaurants remove all their high-calorie desserts because I’m on a diet, and a choice to have chocolate cake might “trigger” me? Of course not. Do beaches ban skinny girls in bikinis because it might make me feel bad about myself? Nope. Dealing with adversity and “triggering” things is what makes people strong. It’s also a reality that we can’t avoid once we leave the walls of academia.

Thankfully, some students recognized the absurdity behind the scale removal.

“Next it will be the mirrors,” said Carleton student Riley Main via Facebook.

“We shouldn’t remove something because some people abuse it,” said sophomore Marko Miljusevic. “If they can’t handle the number that shows up on the scale then don’t step on it.”
