Nancy Pelosi: Make Me Speaker Because I’m A Woman

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is trying a different, but predictable, approach to ensure she’s re-elected as House Speaker once Democrats officially reclaim the House of Representatives in January.

Pelosi is now arguing that not only is she the most qualified, having served as House Speaker for four years under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, but that she should be Speaker again because she’s a woman.

Anyone could see this coming. The Left has become so mired in identity politics that simply being anything other than a white male is qualification enough for a job. Pelosi may have been there for Democrats when they made impressive gains in 2008 (mostly thanks to Obama being elected as president), but she was also there when they lost a historic number of seats to Republicans just two years later. She and Democrats may have held the House for four years, but under her leadership, they lost control to Republicans — for eight years. Even now, they will only have a slim majority.

Pelosi is trying to retain power even as opposition to her speakership grows. Now she’s warning Democrats not to vote against a woman (her) after the Democrat Party spent the past two years sacrificing men and sanity to cater to angry feminists who think American women are some of the most oppressed in the world.

The argument goes, according to Politico, that women propelled the party to victory, so a woman (she) should lead.

“Push her out, and men may take over the party at a time when more than 100 women are heading to Capitol Hill and after female voters have been thoroughly alienated by President Donald Trump,” Politico reported. “Embrace her, and she’ll prioritize legislation empowering women on issues ranging from equal pay to anti-harassment legislation.”

Side note: Equal pay has been the law of the land since 1963 (Equal Pay Act, ever heard of it?) and sexual harassment is already against the law and workplace policies.

And she can prioritize meaningless legislation aimed at low-information women voters all she wants, it won’t get through the Republican-held Senate or White House.

Pelosi’s supporters are using the “woman card” to back her up, attempting to sex-shame anyone who votes against her. What if the opposition put up another woman as speaker? There’s no way Pelosi would dismiss this line of attack.

“I think it would look ridiculous if we win back the House … we have a pink wave with women who have brought back the House, then you’re going to not elect the leader who led the way? No,” Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL) told Politico. “That would be wrong.”

Incoming Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) echoed Frankel’s statement: “We have a president who is a misogynist, a president who has been antagonistic to women’s issues… There is no better person at the very top than” Pelosi.

Other Democrat women may lose their bids for top positions within the party. They’ll lose their bids not because of their sex, but because more talented men are also running. But that doesn’t matter, the party must promote people based on identifying features, not talent.

Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) abandoned her bid for assistant Democratic leader after Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Ben Ray Lujan entered the race. Lujan ran the DCCC and led Democrats to victory in 2018, but who cares? He’s a man.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) might lose Democratic Caucus chair to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Members of the party find Jeffries to be charismatic and think he might be speaker one day. Neither Jeffries nor Lujan are white, but at this point, being a woman is more important than anything else for Democrats.

“You cannot have the four leaders of Congress [and] the president of the United States, these five people, and not have the voice of women,” Pelosi told CBS on Sunday. “Especially since women were the majority of the voters, the workers in campaigns, and now part of this glorious victory.”

Why not? Why can’t we just have the best people for the job, regardless of sex?
