A 20-year-old Muslim refugee who reportedly raped a 10-year-old is justifying his heinous actions by citing the accepted mores in his home country. Raping children is “culturally acceptable” in Myanmar, Mufiz Rahaman told a court in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday.
“The court heard Rahaman preyed on the young boy while he was living with a group of refugees, including his father, at a vacant RSL club in Lakemba, a suburb in Sydney’s south west, on January 8, 2015,” notes The Daily Mail.
Both the victim and his rapist fled Buddhist-majority country of Myanmar to escape religious persecution as minority Rohingya Muslims.
According to the Mail, Rahaman offered the 10-year-old money in exchange for sexual favors, but the boy rejected the sickening transaction.
“’I’ll give you money for this,” said the rapist, according to the victim’s father, who overheard the conversation before entering the scene of the crime.
“My father will hit me,” the prepubescent boy responded.
“The boy’s dad stormed into the room and found Rahaman lying on top of his son who was face down on the bed with his pants around his knees,” reports the Mail.
Sadly, this incident seems to be a product of a cycle of sexual violence. In court, the pedophile reportedly told the judge that he was a victim of childhood molestation himself. The sexual abuse apparently occurred in Rahaman’s home country of Myanmar, before he arrived to Australia in 2012.
