Following President Trump’s announcement that he will announce his nominee to fill the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat on the Supreme Court, Democrats responded with calls to block the nominee and filibuster it. One of these Democrats is Oregon junior senator Jeff Merkley. Talking to the media, he said the following regarding the Supreme Court vacancy:
“This is a stolen seat. This is the first time a Senate majority has stolen a seat. We will use every lever in our power to stop this.”
This comment surpasses Kamala Harris’s assertion that infrastructure spending on transportation is a human right as the most absurd thing a Democratic senator has said in the past week. The vacancy was not “stolen” by a Senate majority. Despite staunch criticism from President Obama and the Democrats, the Senate’s decision not to confirm Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court last year fell within constitutional limits. In fact, former Vice President Joe Biden also attempted to stall Supreme Court appointments during an election year during his tenure as a Senator. Once Trump won the presidency in a fair election, the power to nominate a replacement for Scalia transitioned from Obama to Trump.
Last Tuesday, when over 100 people rallied outside Merkley’s downtown Portland office to thank him for his opposition to Trump’s Cabinet nominees, his state director read a statement praising demonstrators for their activism, saying, “Thank you for being here today to demonstrate the power of our ‘we the people’ democracy and show that when we join together we can send a message loud and clear to this new administration: We will not be silent in this new era.”
However, facts escape Sen. Merkley’s cranium in favor of alternative facts intended to galvanize the Democrats to filibuster the next Supreme Court justice and incite their liberal allies to embark on another grueling fight against the Trump administration.
The Democrats are off to a wonderful start this week in exposing their moronic tendencies.
