More than 50 House Republicans sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Monday questioning his leadership over the growing border crisis along the nation’s southern border.

The letter was led by Border Security Caucus co-chair Brian Babin (R-TX) and Republican Study Committee Chair Jim Banks (R-IN).

“Your actions have willingly endangered American citizens, undermined the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty. Your failure to secure the border and enforce the laws passed by Congress raise grave questions about your suitability for office,” the letter stated.

The letter also called the DHS leader to move forward with new efforts to better secure the southern border following increasing numbers of illegal border crossings.

The GOP House leaders specifically called on Mayorkas to take “all legal and necessary actions at your disposal – of which there are many – to secure the southern border, rectify the dangerous policies this administration has put in motion over the past year, and bring your agency into compliance with the laws passed by the United States Congress.”

The concern has increased since the Biden administration recently announced plans to end the Trump-era Title 42 in May. More than 221,000 migrant encounters occurred in March, making it the highest recorded under the Biden administration. The number will likely increase even more following the rollback of Title 42.

In March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that it would be scrapping the Title 42 policy on May 23 after determining that the rule is “no longer necessary.”

The CDC said in part, “After considering current public health conditions and an increased availability of tools to fight COVID-19 (such as highly effective vaccines and therapeutics), the CDC Director has determined that an Order suspending the right to introduce migrants into the United States is no longer necessary.”

Border Patrol released estimates that they were planning to encounter 8,000 illegal aliens a day this spring before Title 42 ends.

Congressman John Katko (R-NY) also recently addressed the concern, as some experts are expecting 18,000 migrants per day.

Katko said, “Right now, we’re seeing about 8,000 aliens a day coming across  — 8,000 — operational control is about 5,000. They expect that once Title 42 is rescinded, it will go up to as much as 18,000 a day,” Katko said. “There’s no way that we can control the border in any way, shape, or form if that happens.”

ABC News also reported that the “Department of Homeland Security is bracing for as many as 18,000 migrants per day at the southern border if Title 42 is revoked, according to senior DHS officials who briefed reporters on Tuesday.”

The concerns have led Republicans and at least 10 Democrats to oppose the ending of Title 42. Among Democrats opposing the change are both Arizona Democratic Sens. Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema.
