Along with anti-Trump speeches, expect to see a lot of black dresses at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.
According to E! News, “more than thirty female actresses who are attending and or presenting at the 2018 Golden Globes have vowed to wear all black to this year’s ceremony.”
Insiders say the movement started with a select group of actresses before it became a call to show solidarity. The Morning Breath show hosts Jackie Oshry and Claudia Oshry also confirmed this on Thursday.
“So all of the female actresses and attendees, or most of them at least, are standing in solidarity together in a form of protest. They’re all going to be wearing black, obviously to protest the injustices that have been taking place in Hollywood since forever,” the hosts shared.
Actresses present at the award show based on the nominations are: Jessica Chastain, Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan and Emma Stone among many other nominees and presenters.
Meryl Streep will once again be championed as a feminist icon that evening, even though she vehemently denies knowing that her “god” Harvey Weinstein routinely abused women, allegedly.
Showing solidarity with certain causes has become a big trend at awards shows in recent years. The latest has seen stars wearing a blue ribbon to support the American Civil Liberties Union and their “Stand With the ACLU” initiative.
On top of the all-black dress protest at the Golden Globes, the SAG awards also announced that all presenters that evening will be women. Here’s how the feminists at Slate put it:
Like many award ceremonies, the SAG Awards usually pairs a man and a women to announce each winner—but this year, only women will have that honor. The lineup is yet to be announced, but the ceremony, which has never before had an emcee, will be hosted by Kristen Bell. The nominations were also announced by women, with Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash revealing the nominees Wednesday morning alongside SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris, awards committee chair JoBeth Williams, and awards committee member Elizabeth McLaughlin.
Men will still be allowed on the stage sometimes, like when they win an award, but with female-heavy ensemble casts nominated for Lady Bird, The Handmaid’s Tale, GLOW, and Orange Is the New Black, hopefully we won’t have to see more than a dozen suits on stage for the evening.
Kathy Connell, the SAG Awards executive producer, said that 2017 belongs to women. “Beginning with the Women’s March in January, it’s been the year of the woman,” she said. “This is a unifying salute to women who have been very brave and speaking up.”
“We don’t want to slight the men who have given great performances this year,” Connell added. “Knowing our membership, I’m sure our men will embrace the opportunity to honor women.”
