McConnell Tells Trump No Obamacare Vote Before Election, Trump Responds On Twitter

Despite President Donald Trump’s claims last week that the Republican Party would be the “party of health care,” Senate Republicans are refusing to play ball.

The Hill reports that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told Trump on Monday that the senate would not vote on the president’s desired Obamacare replacement before the 2020 election. McConnell did, however, tell Trump that the senate would do what they could to pass bills that would lower the cost of health care.

“We had a good conversation yesterday afternoon and I pointed out to him the Senate Republicans’ view on dealing with comprehensive health care reform with a Democratic House of Representatives,” McConnell said on Tuesday.

As an example, McConnell said senate Republicans would be “working on prescription drug pricing and other issues. He added that he was “clear” with Trump about not developing a comprehensive health care bill to replace Obamacare.

“He did say, as he later tweeted, that he accepted that and he would be developing a plan that he would take to the American people during the 2020 campaign,” McConnell said.

Trump did tweet Monday night about how terrible Obamacare has been for the country and claimed again that Republicans are working on a comprehensive plan that would lower premiums and deductibles.

“Everybody agrees that ObamaCare doesn’t work. Premiums & deductibles are far too high – Really bad HealthCare! Even the Dems want to replace it, but with Medicare for all, which would cause 180 million Americans to lose their beloved private health insurance,” Trump tweeted.

He continued: “The Republicans are developing a really great HealthCare Plan with far lower premiums (cost) & deductibles than ObamaCare. In other words it will be far less expensive & much more usable than ObamaCare. Vote will be taken right after the Election when Republicans hold the Senate & win back the House.”

After The New York Times published an article on Tuesday claiming Trump “backed off plans” to replace Obamacare, the president took to Twitter again to set the record straight and take a jab at the paper.

“I was never planning a vote prior to the 2020 Election on the wonderful HealthCare package that some very talented people are now developing for me & the Republican Party. It will be on full display during the Election as a much better & less expensive alternative to ObamaCare,” Trump tweeted.

“This will be a great campaign issue. I never asked Mitch McConnell for a vote before the Election as has been incorrectly reported (as usual) in the @nytimes, but only after the Election when we take back the House etc. Republicans will always support pre-existing conditions!” he continued.

The Hill reported that Senate Republicans did not know Trump would be asking for comprehensive health care reform prior to their meeting on Monday outside of a single tweet from the president which declared Republicans would become “the Party of Healthcare.”
