Maryland police arrested a 46-year-old man on Wednesday after he reportedly threatened “mass violence” against an elementary school.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office stated that the man was wanted “in connection with making several threats of mass violence,” NBC News reported.

The man had threatened he would do violence in calls to Gale-Bailey Elementary School in Marbury and a business in White Plains, the sheriff’s office said, adding, “The calls to the specific locations are related to people he knows and is believed to be domestic-related.”

“‘Out of an abundance of caution,’ extra officers will be at Gale-Bailey Elementary this week, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday evening,” NBC News noted.

After the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, allegedly committed by an 18-year-old male, and the mass shooting in Buffalo, also allegedly committed by an 18-year-old male, calls mounted for banning eighteen-year-olds from buying guns.

“Should an 18-year-old be allowed to buy a semi-automatic rifle?” NPR wrote, repeating, “But one question remains: Should an 18-year-old be allowed to buy a semi-automatic rifle?”

New York Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul called for legislation raising the age of purchasing certain types of firearms from 18 to 21 on Wednesday.

Former NBC News correspondent Luke Russert tweeted, “Should an 18 year old be allowed to buy a gun but not a beer? One idea—do what the Feds did to get the drinking age to 21. Minimum 21 years old to buy a gun. Restrict Federal funds for states that don’t comply.”

But recent mass shooting show that a ban on 18-year-olds owning guns wouldn’t have helped:

in April, a 62-year-old man opened fire in a New York subway, wounding 23 people.

In March 2021, four people were killed, one of them a child, by a 44-year-old man in a shooting in Orange, California.

Also in March 2021, a 21-year-old man shot and killed 10 people in Boulder, Colorado.

In February 2020, a 51-year-old gunman shot and killed five people at the Molson Coors Beverage Co brewing complex in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In August 2019, 24-year-old gunman killed nine people in downtown Dayton, Ohio.

The day before the Dayton shooting, a 21-year-old man shot 23 people in El Paso, Texas.

In May, 2019, a 40-year-old man killed 12 people at a municipal building in Virginia.

In February 2019, a 45-year-old man opened fire at an Illinois factory, killing five people.

In November 2018, a 28-year-old former Marine combat veteran killed 12 people in a bar in Thousand Oaks, California.

In October 2018, a 49-year-old gunman killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh-area synagogue.
