Louisville Democratic mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg survived a shooting attempt on Monday after a local activist reportedly pulled a handgun on him and began firing in what some are calling an “assassination attempt.”

“We are shaken, but safe,” Greenberg told reporters following the incident.

“He said someone walked up to his campaign HQ, they greeted them, then the person started shooting. He says a bullet grazed his sweater,” according to David Williams with Spectrum News 1.

Greenberg released a statement regarding the shooting to Twitter following the incident.

“This morning, I was gathered for a brief meeting with four of my incredible team members in our campaign office. A man walked into our office. When we greeted him, he pulled out a gun, aimed directly at me and began shooting,” he said in the statement.

“The individual closest to the door managed to bravely get the door closed, which we barricaded and the shooter fled the scene.”

Though miraculously unharmed, one bullet grazed his sweater.

“Let me say again that all of us are blessed to be with you. Despite one bullet coming so close that it grazed my sweater, no one was physically harmed, and we are extraordinarily grateful for our safety. We are shaken, but safe,” Greenberg said.

Prior to the statement, Greenberg took to Twitter to post all members of his team were safe following the shooting.

“My team and I are fortunately all safe. We are all with LMPD now. I will provide an update as soon as possible. Thank you for the outpouring of support,” he wrote.

The suspected shooter, 21-year-old Quintez Brown, was taken into custody without incident by Louisville Metro Police.

“The 21-year-old was identified as ‘a former intern and editorial columnist’ of the Louisville Courier-Journal by the paper itself, where he wrote that he had studied philosophy and Pan-Africanism while studying at the University of Louisville, where he’d previously served as the opinion editor of the school’s newspaper, the Cardinal,” the Daily Beast reported.

Brown is also a candidate in the city’s District 5 to represent the Louisville Metro Council.

Metro Council President David James told WLKY he believed the shooting was an assassination attempt.

Police Chief Erika Shields confirmed a round did hit Greenberg’s clothes. “We consider ourselves very fortunate today,” she said in the report.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer reached out to Greenberg following the incident.

“I am very saddened by this attack at the offices of Craig Greenberg. I have spoken to Mr. Greenberg and am grateful that no one was injured. I’m thankful to @LMPD and our federal partners for their quick response in clearing the scene and detaining a possible suspect,” he wrote on Twitter.

Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear also shared his support for Greenberg.

“I was appalled to learn about the attempt on Craig Greenberg’s life. I have spoken with Craig and I am grateful that he is physically unharmed. Violence is never the answer. Britainy and I are holding him close in prayer,” he wrote.
