FLASHBACK: This Little Detail From The First ‘Dunkirk’ Trailer Is Hilarious

Christopher Nolan’s epic — and apparently excellent World War II film Dunkirk hits the theaters Friday. In honor of that much anticipated event, it seems like a good time to check out something a few eagle-eyed folks noticed when the first teaser trailer of the film was released last year.

As highlighted by The Independent‘s Christopher Hooton last summer, one extra featured in the initial date announcement trailer for Nolan’s newest inevitable blockbuster appears to have needed a little more guidance about how not to be an extra, as well as on the proper mood of the moment.

Instead of the sheer terror that the rest of his brothers in arms rightly emote as the German planes descend, one extra instead decides it’s high time to look directly at the camera, which of course is the ONE THING YOU NEVER DO as an extra, and then undermines the harrowing tone of the moment by, as Hooton puts it, “offering a sort of bemused smirk.”

But don’t let one little extra blowing a scene deter you from seeing the film, which is getting rave reviews. Currently, it’s racked up a 94% on RottenTomatoes. Here’s the review site’s summary:

Dunkirk serves up emotionally satisfying spectacle, delivered by a writer-director in full command of his craft and brought to life by a gifted ensemble cast that honors the fact-based story.

Dunkirk is Nolan’s first film based on an historical event. According to IMDB, Nolan “reportedly received a $20 million salary against 20% of the box office gross, the biggest deal for any director since Peter Jackson received the same amount with King Kong (2005).”

TRIGGER WARNING: Though the film appears to be well worth the $20 ticket, social justice warriors might really want to think twice about going. As the USA Today graciously warned us all, for some inexplicable reason, Nolan failed to make any women or minorities leads in a film about an actual historical event that, as Daily Wire‘s John Nolte helpfully reminds the PC paper, featured a bunch of white males being rescued by white males while being bombed by white males…
