Just when conservatives were ready to follow the lead of Lindsey Graham 2.0, Lindsey 3.0 interrupted to yell “time out!”
In response to President Trump’s perfectly timed troll of Nancy Pelosi on Thursday in which he canceled her overseas expedition in retaliation for her cancellation of the State of the Union address, Graham chided the president for acting “sophomoric.”
“One sophomoric response does not deserve another,” Graham said in a tweet reported by Newsweek. “Speaker Pelosi’s threat to cancel the State of the Union is very irresponsible and blatantly political. President Trump denying Speaker Pelosi military travel to visit our troops in Afghanistan, our allies in Egypt and NATO is also inappropriate.”
“I am glad the Speaker wants to meet our troops and hear from our commanders and allies. I am very disappointed she’s playing politics with the State of the Union,” he later added. “I wish our political leadership could find the same desire to work for common goals as those who serve our nation in uniform and other capacities.”
Graham’s rebuke of Trump comes shortly after several critics, including a high-profile freshman Democrat, have been waging a homophobic whisper campaign against him by suggesting that President Trump is using Graham’s alleged secret sex life to blackmail him for support.
“It could be that Donald Trump or somebody knows something pretty extreme about Lindsey Graham,” MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle said this week. “We’re gonna leave it there.”
Later, newly-elected Muslim congresswoman Ilhan Omar made a similar remark that Graham was “compromised,” prompting the RNC to issue an emphatic rebuke. “Breathtaking bigotry, homophobia from a member of Congress. It’s not funny, and puzzling why Dems get away with outdated stereotypes and dumb conspiracy theories like this,” said the RNC.
Earlier Thursday, President Trump released a letter informing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that her “public relations” trip abroad would be canceled due to the government shutdown. The move was in obvious retaliation to Pelosi canceling the State of the Union address for the same reason.
“Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed,” wrote Trump in the letter. “We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.”
“In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate,” the president continued. “I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown.”
With his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, President Trump then offered Speaker Pelosi the option to purchase a commercial flight if she wanted.
“I look forward to seeing you soon and even more forward to watching our open and dangerous Southern Border finally receive the attention, funding, and security it so desperately deserves!” concluded Trump.
Peloso was reportedly scheduled to take her trip at 3 p.m. Thursday and learned about the cancelation via Twitter.
