Krauthammer Pontificates: Cruz ‘Destroyed His Political Career’

   DailyWire.com

Speaking on Fox News on Thursday, pundit Charles Krauthammer pontificated that Ted Cruz’s speech Wednesday night was the “longest suicide note in American political history.”

Krauthammer went further, saying loftily that Cruz’s subsequent remarks, in which he cited Trump’s battery of insults directed at Cruz’s wife and father as a partial cause of his actions, had “destroyed his political career.”

Krauthammer’s remarks in full:

What Cruz delivered was the longest suicide note in American political history and this morning he added an addendum, because last night the theme of it was, that as a matter of principle as a conservative and as a constitutionalist, he could not endorse Donald Trump and at the beginning of he thing he did this morning he said I’m going to watch and wait and see whether I can support him. And then he lost it, and then he blew it; we just saw that clip. You could see him, it was towards the end of this event, and he was asked a question about endorsing, and he said, you could see him calculating, should I really give the reason. And then he said, this is all personal; this is about the wife, the father, and then, what that does, cause he’s a calculating guy, what that does is that it totally undid the great political, philosophical reasons he offered last night. That was already in jeopardy because he offered for the first six months of the campaign he was especially nice to Trump; he was drafting in the wake of the head car and everybody else was attacking Trump over the McCain comments and he didn’t, so this was not a matter of principle. It was already a question of last night, but as of this morning, I think he’s destroyed his political career.

Krauthammer’s effort to parse Cruz’s actions into political and philosophic on the one hand and personal on the other in order to pronounce doom on the conservative candidate is shallow at best; Krauthammer, as an avowed atheist, simply will not cotton to the idea that what is personal for someone like Cruz also informs his political philosophy. For a man who swears fealty to traditional religious principles an attack on those he loves is not only an affront to him personally, but an affront philosophically, especially as the nasty, malicious side of Donald Trump manifested in attacks on others is indicative of a man who does not hold by Cruz’s philosophic conservative principles.

Krauthammer’s effort to parse Cruz’s actions into political and philosophic on the one hand and personal on the other in order to pronounce doom on the conservative candidate is shallow at best.

For Krauthammer to jump on the Trump bandwagon and sound the death knell for Cruz is enormously premature; what he simply does not understand from his 30,000-foot perspective is that any red-blooded American male who loves his family would resonate to Cruz going after the malicious person who targeted his family. There are many people who have applauded Cruz for being the only person who would not make obeisance to Trump, whether for personal, political, or philosophic reasons.

“Destroyed his political career”?

We’ll just see. To paraphrase a reputed quote from Mark Twain, reports of Cruz’s political death may have been greatly exaggerated.
