The Democrats have an anti-Semitism problem. Not the Republicans. Just the Democrats. Not Donald Trump. The Democrats. It is not a “bigotry” problem. Not a “hate” problem. Not a problem with this “phobia” or that. It’s a problem with Jew-hatred, which is a specific, unique and uniquely damaging sort of filthy-mindedness.
After Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar went off on another of her stereotype-riddled attacks on Israel, the House tried to adopt a resolution condemning anti-Semitism. The resolution did not name Omar specifically, nor was she threatened with any disciplinary action. But even this weak-sauce attempt to correct course was shot down by the young left-of-left Democrats.
That’s when, appallingly, the Democrat-Media Complex set out to cover up the problem.
The ugliest and most shameful effort came from The New York Times. Conservatives have gotten used to watching the left-wing media define every event in terms of the “issues” that suit their narrative. If a Muslim or a leftist shoots someone, the “issue” is guns. If the killer is a conservative, the “issue” is conservatism. We all know the routine.
For The New York Times, the issue raised by Ilhan Omar’s nasty claim that Jews control American politics with all their Jewish money was — wait for it — whether Jews control American politics with all their Jewish money.
“Ilhan Omar’s Criticism Raises the Question: Is Aipac Too Powerful?” ran the disgusting headline on this disgusting piece by Sheryl Gay Stolberg. AIPAC of course is the pro-Israel Pac.
“Ms. Omar’s insinuation that money fuels American support for Israel …” Stolberg writes, “revived a fraught debate in Washington over whether the pro-Israel lobbying behemoth has too much sway over American policy in the Middle East.”
Get that? The debate is not over how hard to censure Omar’s anti-Semitic blather but whether or not her anti-Semitic blather is true.
Chuck Todd also disgraced himself with an attack on what-aboutism that was a pure piece of what-aboutism.
“I’m obsessed with anti-Semitism,” said Todd on his MSNBC I’m Obsessed segment, “and the game of what-aboutism being played now by both parties. Stop it. You both have a problem … By trafficking in … anti-Semitic tropes … Omar opened the door for Republicans to point fingers … But unless you want to forget the chants of ‘Jews will not replace us,’ by neo-Nazis in Charlottesville … President Trump saying there were good people on both sides of that debate … the synagogue slaughter in Pittsburgh last year … you have to acknowledge that the right has a problem with anti-Semitism too.”
It would be hard to imagine a more dishonest example of the “Republicans Pounce” school of journalism. The shifty shift from parties — Democrats and Republicans — to sides — Left and Right — is the giveaway. Todd is comparing Democrat members of congress with fringe Alt-Right dirtbags and violent lunatics. Including Trump in the list is just ridiculous.
Finally, the mealy-mouthed Democrat retreat into passing a resolution that condemned anti-Semitism, Anti-Muslim discrimination and other forms of bigotry simply adds to the problem. Other forms of bigotry are not the issue here. By saying too much, the resolution says nothing.
The role of anti-Semitism in Western history makes it unique. Because Christianity shaped every aspect of the West — and because Christ was a Jew — anti-Semitism is a form of Western self-hatred that opposes every good thing about our culture: our God, our freedom and our commitment to the sacred dignity of the individual. Not coincidentally, extreme leftism rejects these things as well — and this is where the real trouble lies.
Because the thing is: Anti-Semitism is the devil’s flagpole. Wherever it appears, you know evil has made camp. Yes, it can infest any kind of philosophy, because every human heart is accessible to wickedness, but it is always a sure and certain sign that that philosophy has gone wrong.
The Democrats — not both sides — have a problem, not with amorphous “hate” but with anti-Semitism. If they can’t fix that problem, they and their party should be consigned to oblivion.
