KKK Marches On The White House In New U2 Video

In what is perhaps the rock band U2’s most politically charged song since “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” their latest fare, “Get Out of Your Own Way,” is best summed up as an anti-Trump “resistance” anthem complete with a psychedelic music video where hooded KKK nut-jobs march on the White House.

The video unfolds entirely in stop-motion animation, and paper cut-outs of people in white KKK robes appear in various locales before finally arriving at Trump’s White House. The rainbow sky in the backdrop suggests an obfuscation of tranquility and peace.

According to the Israeli graffiti collective Broken Fingaz Crew, who directed the video, the imagery pokes at the worldwide rise of fascism, which apparently includes the election of President Trump.

“The video addresses the current political situation,” the directors stated in a press release. “2017 for us was the year fascists worldwide felt confident enough to raise their heads again, encouraged by Trump and other world leaders, who use people’s fear to build more walls and segregation.”

Lyrics sung by Bono transmit the same message of “resistance.” In fact, the word “resistance” makes an appearance at one point:

Your skin’s not covering
And resistance
Love has got to fight for its existence
The enemy has armies of assistance

The message becomes less poetic and more straightforward several verses down:

Fight back
Don’t take it lyin’ down, you got to bite back
The face of liberty’s starting to crack
She had a plan up until she got smacked in the mouth
And it all went south
Like freedom
The slaves are lookin’ for someone to lead them
The master’s lookin’ for someone to need him
The promised land is there for those who need it most

The song concludes with a play on Christ’s beatitudes:

Blessed are the arrogant
For there is the kingdom of their own company
Blessed are the superstars
For the magnificence in their light
We understand better our own insignificance
Blessed are the filthy rich
For you can only truly own what you give away
Like your pain

“Get Out of Your Own Way” evokes a similar vibe as the Moby music video “In This Cold Place” released in 2017 that featured an animated Nazi robot Trump being blown to bits.
